South Austin Trail Network, The SATN
mack_turtle replied to The Tip's topic in Mountain Biking Discussion
Rode BCGB yesterday and the main trails were THICK with pedestrian traffic. No big deal, I just slowed down and tried to talk to everyone. I was passed by a rider with earbuds in who was having none of it. He was gonna KOM dammit. I left like I had to make up for his behavior by being extra cordial with everyone. -

Do The Haters Hate Yellow Bike & Frankenbike Too?

Confirmed: he has a point. Delusions of persecution are a serious matter. -
Take a cheap flat screw driver and cut/ grind right angles out of the tip. Leave a point 2mm long in the middle. File it round. Now you have a nipple driver in five minutes.

I have not looked in a long time. I'd have to see what Barnet recommends for a reliable tool. There is the Park one and a bunch of clones that are cheap, but I would want instructions to calibrate them or there is no point.

I've built quite a few wheels without one, more by sound and feel. The good ones are so expensive that I could not justify buying the tool unless I built a lot of wheels.

New Products on The Market...

https://www.bikeradar.com/features/this-is-why-its-time-to-stop-using-presta-valves/ "As far as air retention, it comes down to the tube or the tubeless set up more so than the valve. “Both (valves) test similarly on air retention assessments,” according to Maxxis’ Brown." There's nothing superior about presta. The fears about that system are silly folk wisdom and memetic inertia. -

I love YBP and Frankenbike events. I spent three years running a similar co-op in Atlanta. In fact, I moved to ATL specifically to build "landfill bikes" for people that need them. The problem here is that someone trolled you and took the bait, just like you always do. It's a pattern. No one else here is that easily butthurt, just you. I try not to get involved, but it's such a damn waste of space and otherwise good conversation here to tolerate your constant bellyaching. -

Hijack- there's nothing wrong with schraeder valves. The idea that presta seals better is BS. The only reason we use presta is a holdover from roadie narrow rims. -

Get off the cross, there are better uses for the lumber than your desperate attempt at martyrdom. -

Blah blah blah. -
I guess someone will always be offended by everything.

They built BMX bikes with full suspension or put another way they built full suspension mountain bikes with 20 inch wheels. I don't see what's so controversial about that. New and different sure but nothing that anyone should find offensive.

In my decade of mountain biking, I've only experienced the shortest bouts of interest in riding a squishy bike. Now that I saw that video, I don't recognize the person I see in the mirror anymore.

RIP Dirt Rag. I'll miss their blue-collar, iconoclast spin on mtb culture. I can tell from their old magazines that they were trying to keep things punk rock, but it seems like they were in a losing battle with the forces of technopoly. I have a big box of Dirt Rags dating back to Issue 2. I was trying to give them away for a long time but now I am going to keep them.

I don't screw around with trying to identify threadlockers by fluid color. They have number designations for this reason: 242, 608, 609, 222, etc. The numbers tell me what they do, not the colors.

I might need to get that spray bottle from CVS. Most spray bottles die after a few times using them with alcohol. The chemical destroys the spray nozzle in some way unless it's made to handle alcohol.

blue = 242.

Monkey See Monkey Do on South Congress (love this store!) has fun "pencil toppers" for a few cents each. You can glue a pesta cap inside one and put it on your bike. My mtb has a zombie and the CX bike has a chrome skull with red eyes I made this way.
