  1. I have a funny story about that spot too, but it was from back when the trail went up it vs. down it. A buddy of mine who never mountain biked before said he wanted to ride with me. So I tell him sure come on over, thinking he would use one of my extra bikes. He shows up at my house and starts unloading his bike out of the back of his SUV. It certainly wasn't a mountain bike, but it did have some form of front suspension. I again asked if he wanted to use one of my bikes and he insisted on just riding his own, although I did convince him to use one of my helmets since he hadn't brought one. Anyway to make a long story short, I took him over to Peddler's Pass and started down the trail at a casual pace, him following closely behind. We come up on that spot and I lift my front wheel and glide up the rock face like I always did, and before I could even turn around to check on him, I hear this god-awful clanking noise from all the loose parts on his bike - fenders, chain guard, kickstand, etc - as he rams into that rock. Amazingly though when I finally turn around, he's already up and over the rock with an ear-to-ear grin on his face, and I'm thinking how the hell did he clear that with his bike making that much noise.

  2. One of the unfounded biases I had when I moved here a dozen years ago. Once I got over myself, I realized that riding here IS fun and can be challenging. That said, I ride with a 32 90% of the time.

  3. It's so flat around here you can put a 30t on the front and run a 10-40 or 11-40 and very rarely run out of gear. oh and just so you know, 40t is a bigger gear than 50t.

  5. Everyone. Is. Different. The lack of context is stunning. But expected. This is like saying "there are lots of cars out there these days, what are the best ones, without narrowing the field to how you drive, how many people are in your family, what you are looking for in a car and what your budget is. A new Mercedes and a 2004 Hyundai are both viable answers. There you go.

  6. I spent 2 years on gx 42, 2 years on gx eagle 50, and just switched to XT 46. Big fan of the 46 so far. 42 was a bit too tough at times. 50 was a lot of spinning.

  7. Chainrings, right? Then I say a 40T with a 20T cog works pretty well around here.

  8. No buds for this one. Just loud, hard driven speakers.
