Sluggo
I’m going on a mostly solo 3 week riding and car camping trip through New Mexico, Colorado and maybe Utah. Should I buy a pistol? If so, what kind do you recommend? I’m not a gun guy, but I know how handle one and can shoot. I’m concerned about driving with a gun and leaving it in my vehicle while out riding. Thoughts? TAF
I’d strongly recommend a Texas License to Carry permit if you plan to do this, as it makes State Troopers in Colorado and New Mexico a good deal more relaxed if they pull you over, and if they ask if you have a firearm in the vehicle. As to the firearm, I guess it depends where you are going. Me, alone - I’d take one, for sure. If you feel you would rather ride with it than leave it in the vehicle, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm is pretty compact and light. If you’re gonna stash it in the vehicle, there are plenty of after market secure storage options for vehicles.

Mattlikesbikes
J frame. I'd buy a cheap Taurus 38, load it with 38+p. Could do first round snake shot, since let's be honest, snakes are your biggest threat. At least the threat you are most likely to be successful against with a pistol and no training. Sluggo
You’re probably right. I’ll stick with a machete and wasp spray.
notyal
Your best bet is probably to mount a turret and high powered machine gun to the top of the FJ. There is no better defense than a good offense.
