Wide bars, slack geometry...they knew what they were doing, in the 70s

Heard Gary Fisher give a history lesson at BSS a few years back at a party/book tour for the 25 anniversary of the Rock Hopper.

Notice 2 things he said were key to those old klunkers. 1) They looked for pre-WWII Schwinn Excelsiors because the post war models had lower bottom brackets. 2) Look at the big ass brake levers. They were usually Magura motorcycle levers because the leverage ratio needed to be so much better on the cheesy canti rim brakes they had to back then!

I never understood why MTB bars used to be so narrow. After growing up on 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s dirtbikes (trail bikes and dualsports) all of the factory bars were wide. 

Definitely made for some sketchy riding.
