RidingAgain
Just came across this little titanium beauty... Thought it might be a good start for a thread on new products being launched. Terske Titanium Valve Stems... https://bikepacking.com/gear/lindarets-terske-titanium-tubeless-valve-stems/?fbclid=IwAR2Q6sFcBaSyYArdoi1rLKk9NZgZsl199cB-tcLEn2ZMLiJiJTsZ77vuc-A Edited January 28, 2020 by RidingAgain
Woody
Just curious, are you buying a pair of these? they’re a little rich for my blood! 1
TAF
As usual, RA posts a link with no real commentary, and then goes off and plays on his Nintendo for a while. "Thought it might be a good start for a thread" - why not tell us which wheelset you are considering trying them on, etc? Bear in mind I have you blocked, so I'll look tomorrow for this:

notyal
Honestly they aren't as expensive as I would have guessed. $40 for a pair. I would've guessed $80+. On the other hand, considering I use homemade sealant, gorilla tape, and valves cut out of old tubes, I'm probably not going to spring for Ti valve stems anytime soon.

RidingAgain
Now that we've got that cleared up about TAF... Here's what interests me about new product development... Which often starts off at the higher end of the retail pricing spectrum... It's referred to as "...the trickle down effect..." in Formula 1. And no, it's not perfect, but the thought and opportunity are there. When development takes place with product design, there is the potential for some aspects of this development to "...trickle down..." into lower end consumer products. Case in point... Regarding the titanium valve stems presented in the above comment/link... I see this as something that could "...trickle down..." to lower end consumer products... "...and the rubber rim gasket is replaceable." (Not sure if there are any other valve stems that have the same replacement ability) Here's a short article of the trickle down effect in F1... https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/interactives/special-feature/f1-trickle-down-effect.php
RidingAgain
Just now, Woody said: Riding Again, you didn’t answer my question, are you buying a pair of these stems?? I might. I've just bought the hubs I wanted for the wheels I'd like to build. I finally had the time to get the whole spoke length thing worked out. And the rims that I want to use have just come up on eBay at a really affordable price. So the possibility of my finally building wheels is on the horizon. And patience is a virtue, Woody. I was writing a response dealing with something TAF brought up.

Use a spoke calculator of course, but don't trust manufacturer claims about size. (I have been burned when I calculated spoke length for some WTB rims and the spokes came up 2mm too short. WTBs rim dimensions were off and WTB confirmed that their data was wrong.)

But what I find is that saving bucks in certain areas frees up a few dollars that can be used smartly in other areas. I'll go spend $35 for my wife and myself at the Chinese buffet... And then crap out what I ate a few hours later. So spending $40 on a set of stems that may last me a few years, for me, doesn't seem too bad a deal. mack_turtle
I bought some American Classic valve stems. Superior design, uses o-rings, flange on the inside so you can't rip the rubber gasket off. Much cheaper that the titanium ones above. Aluminum is certainly strong enough for this application. https://amclassic.com/index.php/tubeless-parts/tubeless-valve-pair.html

Absolutely, mack_turtle. As I got more informed about wheel building I came to realized that it's not just an afternoon stroll in the park deal... Not if you want a properly built wheel that will last. And as you know, I'm a big guy, so my wheels need to be strong, and a major aspect of strong wheels is proper building. Also... I will be coming to you for help when I get it all together and am ready to give building a go. Here are some of what I've been looking at this past week (these are just the pages I have opened at the moment)... https://wheelbuilder.com/dt-champion-straight-gauge-spoke/#product-reviews https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/wheelbuilding/book.php https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/ https://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/help-spoke-length-different-values-different-calculators-1044517.html http://hub.chainreactioncycles.com/buying-guides/wheels-and-tyres/spokes-buying-guide/ https://spokes-calculator.dtswiss.com/en/calculator https://leonard.io/edd/ https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0202/9884/files/TCS_WTB_Rim_Users_Manual.pdf https://www.google.com/search?q=etrto+vs+erd&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiB54m-5pfnAhUFKKwKHXgCBSkQ_AUoAXoECA0QAw&biw=1473&bih=1060#imgrc=-kMW93V2uMYgBM https://www.sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html#spokes
RidingAgain
As usual... I strongly suggest folks read the comments after the article... For me, the comments section always contains valuable real life info... And there are some interesting comments on steel vs. aluminum vs. brass vs. carbon vs. titanium, mack_turtle. For example... mack_turtle
To buy spokes, I'd recommend the additional cost of double-butted spokes. There should be an eBay seller called childhood_dreams that sells spokes at reasonable prices. You could also call Dan's Competition about spokes. I've always used the calculator of Sheldon's site. If I had a dime for every time road salt has corroded my valve stems, I'd have enough to cut a valve stem out of a tube that I got for free because it had a hole in it.

mack_turtle
Monkey See Monkey Do on South Congress (love this store!) has fun "pencil toppers" for a few cents each. You can glue a pesta cap inside one and put it on your bike. My mtb has a zombie and the CX bike has a chrome skull with red eyes I made this way. notyal
Oh, I forgot to mention that my recycled stems cut from old tubes also have replaceable gaskets, because they are made from teflon tape.
