I have a five-yr-old Motorola phone that stopped updating 3 years ago and wanted to update to a Pixel - the Pixel 9 is the threshold for satellite texting capability.
We use our phones for texting (usually to plan bike rides), actual phone calls, navigation and a few apps. That's it. TracFone covers it for $13/month. We can add data as needed. We could talk on the phone 24-7 for the next ten years and still not use up all the accrued minutes.
Just discovered yesterday that non-T-Mobile customers can get T-Mobile's satellite service for $10 month. One has to call a toll free number or go to a T-Mobile store - presumably so they can try to suck you in to being a full on T-Mobile customer. No information yet on if the satellite option can be month-to-month or if it's a longer term commitment.
The Pixel 10 will be released in about 3 weeks, so hoping the Pixel 9 price will drop significantly. If so, we'll get new phones and hoping the T-Mobile option will work for us.
Note: There are two aspects to this: 911 emergency calls when out of cell phone range, and satellite texting.
Still have the In-Reach.
