  1. My "it all just worked out somehow" stories all end with a box arriving at my porch.
  2. Well, there are plenty of readers in Austin with $9k-11k bikes too (road or MTB.) The cool thing about these profiles is you get to see all the good parts at once and how they add up in weight. It's more fun reading about exotic cars than a Fiesta!
  3. sub-24lbs 120mm full suspension bike with dropper and remote lockouts. That's why it's US$11k. Adding lightness is expensive once you get below a certain point.
  4. I rode earlier today and tried riding on the edges until I noticed some rocks and then hit some log or something hidden by the grass. I'm not doing that again. Glad you got out there and thanks!
  5. I'll make it a point to try both Trailforks and Strava in the near future. I think Strava is just segments, not sure it's for navigation. As for Trailforks, I have no clue.
  6. I was thinking of Lee McCormack this weekend. So basically anti-row as you're rolling off? That's usually what I do but not when I feel like my front tire will hit a rock on the landing. That's my biggest problem.
  7. I felt faster but my times show slower. I'm sure most of it is the high temps (I usually ride around lunch time) and also still building fitness after a couple of weeks of sickness. The couple of tiny berms on the east side make a huge difference. On the West side, I'm still getting used to the new berms but. Today was only my 3rd time riding them and I'm already getting more confident leaning the bike more.
  8. the 520+ has Strava and Trailforks. I haven't messed with that yet though.
  9. Big difference between 510 and 520. The 520+ is even better and has decent map navigation, on par with the 705. Having said all that, if I were to start over again, I'd go for the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt instead of the 520+. The 520+ requires a lot of button clicking to get stuff done, and doesn't have the little joystick that the 705 had which made it really easy to do stuff like zoom in or out on the map screen. The 520+ is downright annoying as to how many things I have to click to get stuff done (even powering off).
  10. Now this is cool: https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/d/austin-1992-toyota-hilux-surf-rhd/6896384112.html
  11. I guess they still fetch premium prices. Seems like a lot for a 150k mile vehicle: https://austin.craigslist.org/ctd/d/austin-2009-lexus-lx570-lx-570-suv-4wd/6899819402.html
  12. https://www.filthymotorsports.com/King_OEM_Land_Cruiser_Shocks_p/king-25001-266.htm Back on track!
  13. Trail is perfect! I rode Peddlers (watch out for the backhoe working on some berms on the west side), 1/4, and Picnic.. The mud hole at the Y in Picnic is drying up all rutted up. I tried to flatten the ruts but it's too dry now.
  14. S2k is still on my wish list for a fun car to replace the Miata. I like the high revving early 2.0L cars. The prices are insane though. That or FD RX7 Turbo in arrest-me-red color.
  15. I like driving...just not in heavy traffic with a bunch of idiots on the road. 15-6 years ago I was contemplating getting an M3, but I just couldn't see myself not getting in trouble with such a street car. I decided I'd take that extra cash and build a race car and go racing instead. Best decision ever. I don't do that any more but I still go get my kicks in at K1 Speed if I feel the need. I wouldn't track my street car because it doesn't have a roll cage. I do have one little spot on my way to work where I'd be the only one getting damage if I get it wrong...I do this fairly often. Yeah, I miss racing a lot. To me, there's nothing sadder than seeing some awesome fast car in stop and go traffic (recently saw an older GTR on MOPAC) or a fast car being put putted around by some old guy. These days, extra cash goes for travel and bikes. Disclosure: I also own a NA Miata so that's still there for fun and tinkering. It's always possible I could slap a cage on it and go track it at some point, but for now I'm content with what I'm doing.
  16. Thanks guys for the tips. I gotta say that rolling stuff is OK for me, but when I feel like I have to do a mini-manual to miss a rock on the landing is when I get very nervous. I don't trust my timing. It's also why I don't do lots of jumps and bigger drops. I'm working on it though, with some wooden ramps I built as well as a table top I built in my back yard, I hope to synchronize my manual/pump. I have meant to ask this but keep forgetting, the line to the left of the tree, is that a sanctioned alternate line or a cheater line that needs to be blocked?
  17. You can check the recorded segments to see if there is some of that going on. For something like Mulligan, it's awful. But 1/4 has a big distance between the start and the finish, and the finish (at the bailout) is not close to a parallel trail on 1/4 notch (which is usually what triggers Strava to end a segment sooner). Ultimately, if you have a GPS recording every second you'll have a very accurate path recorded, and even better, you can always just hit the lap timer on start and finish and leave Strava out of it altogether. I did notice those were all set in 2012-2014 @CBaron. I'm sure you're right, the trail has gotten slower. I mean E-W. I was traumatized by an endo at Thumper years ago in a similarly benign ledge with a little rock below it. It just unnerves me. I will try it at some point, and I installed the dropper back on my bike just so I could get over it. The little amount of Brushy Creek riding these last 3 months isn't helping either.
  18. I buy new but keep them at least 10 years (current car at 12 years, and previous car at 11 years). I'm keeping a spreadsheet (no surprise for those that know me) of what my current car (2007 Mazdaspeed3) is costing me, including fuel (I don't drive it a lot), depreciation, repairs, maintenance, etc. It's working out to be about $300 a month not including insurance (it was expensive when I still had comprehensive coverage b/c of special speed3 parts) and I've done a lot of the maintenance and repairs including a clutch job (never doing a FWD turbo clutch job again..I should have just paid to have it done). I'm thinking of picking up a used 2012 Leaf since I pretty much drive only around town and we use my wife's car for trips, and she wouldn't mind trading cars if I wanted to ride out of town. I could afford a nicer/better car but I can't see myself spending so much money on a car again. I still love driving my car and it will make a fun reliable car for some high schooler in the near future, but I'm ready for not having to deal with so much maintenance.
  19. My best time is 19:57 E-W and I'm nowhere near those guys at the top as far as fitness or weight and I dismount for Sponge Bob (easily 30 seconds even with Cx dismount). I think that 13:50 from Matt Barkley is for real (you would too if you've ridden with him) and it was likely set on a singlespeed.
  20. I'll take a low side any day over a high side. One of my longer lasting chronic issues was caused by a high side at Walnut Creek on the BMX trail, was going fast into the big berm closer to the road, hit a root, lost rear traction but then it quickly got traction and launched me into the air landing hard on my hip. It clicked for a long time. Most of my other injuries are scrapes and bruises from slow tech sections, usually caused by hesitation.
  21. Same here. Actually, I'd love something more compact like the old S10 or Rangers. I think GM invested $500M in them.
