  1. Probably a teenager over 18 who was deemed “uninvolved”, but in my mind if you were in the vehicle and did not stop him then you are an accomplice. Hopefully charges are coming for that person as well.

  4. I’m from there and It’s a very conservative county and doubt many not so conservative people are moving in as most people in the area are employed in oil or live stock. Likely most of those riders were conservative. Unfortunately ass hats seem to get off the hook in both the conservative counties and the liberal counties all over the country. This one seems particularly malicious and I hope he goes down!

  5. Excellent blog post by Bike Law, the law firm representing the 6 injured cyclists: Felony Charges for Waller Driver The lawyer writing the blog deconstructs the statement from the Arnold's (parents of the minor teen driver) lawyer noting some misstatements and lies. For example, the teen did NOT call 911. The teen did not render or offer to render any kind of aid. The truck is a diesel F 250 and there is quite a bit of obvious damage to the bumper. Note the stain on the pavement, which I'm assuming is radiator fluid; the truck's license plate ended up on on one of the bicycles.

  6. I've always known that as Doghead Trail. Because look at it. But I've heard it called Elvis. The official name is far less interesting though...

  7. They raised the speed limit too. It used to be 35mph which I think is reasonable given the blind turns, and the fact that is shared. I drive Old Spicewood Springs often and it's scary even in a car. If you're doing the limit or 5 over you can still be surprised by someone parking, doing a u-turn, or skateboarding on the road as you come around a bend. I think the limit should be 30mph and enforced tightly. Driving and riding in Victoria, BC with low speed limits was a revelation. Cars, bikes, scooters, skateboards are all going at relatively the same speed....and it doesn't feel like a gamble to try to find a slot to turn right onto or make a left turn if you're driving. It just seems to flow smoother.

  8. 360 is much better now IMHO due to the road bumps they've installed along the white line. That gives me a ton more personal comfort. The idea of Spicewood makes me uncomfortable, but most every yr at the EB, I've found it not too bad. I think that might be worse if I was actually riding it all the way to the end. CP Rd is the one that is feeling worse for me. There's just so many damn people living around those parts now! Later, CJB

  9. I like it, just had to get used to not shifting among chain rings! The old triple had pretty amazing range, but don't really miss it since there aren't any big climbs on the commute. I think this 1x set up has 10 rings on the cassette. There is this one spot in the middle where I keep shifting back and forth for the sweet spot that isn't there. Minor quibble, though. I have a double chain ring on my Salsa Spearfish, and am quite happy with that set up.

  11. Strava didn't kill Chardog. The official map did. It's "Powerline Flow Trail" and "Ski Hill Flow Trail." And as if that wasn't enough...

  12. Riparian law is very interesting, including the right to stop up to a certain distance from the waterway, but certain rich property owners like to limit access to waterways. I can't remember what I was reading or watching about someone testing this by trying to kayak through some areas and having country club security and in general random a-holes threaten them and throw stuff at them. Then there's the other extreme of people going nuts while tubing down rivers and generally making it a nightmare for the people that live along those rivers. Interesting you post this, since just this morning, I was reading a review on the RadPower cargo bike, which includes a centering spring for the front wheel. The comments wondered if the geometry was so bad that it needed this centering spring, but my immediate thought was about the bike on a kickstand while parked doing exactly what has happened to you. I'm not sure if I'll get a cargo bike, but I def see myself getting a commuter e-bike.

  13. my personal take is that this is the structure for law enforcement in most of the US. I'm never surprised anymore.

  14. 360 is actually pretty nice if you hit it early on the weekends before traffic picks up. The worst part about 360 is crossing over the entrance\exit ramps. I'll stop and wait for an opening if needed. I try to avoid two lane roads with no shoulders like Spicewood Springs . That is my least favorite stretch of road on the EB route.

  15. I was in physical therapy about five years ago. A woman was coming in for treatment at the same time as I was seeing my physio. She was a year out from having been hit by a motorist on Parmer who had decided that veering onto the shoulder at speed and hitting two cyclists was preferable to running over a cardboard box in her lane. She was up and walking and superficially looked fairly normal, but the results of the trauma to her body will be forever. Two of the cyclists hit by the coal rolling a**hat are probably in the same situation. Their injuries were severe enough that they were life flighted to a major trauma center. It appears from damage to the truck that the teen driver hit some/all of the riders from behind; he didn't sideswipe the group. I'm interested in the demographics of Waller County. This is the same county where Sandra Bland, who was headed from a job interview at Prairieview A & M, was pulled over for not signaling a lane change. I suspect this is an extremely conservative good ol' boy county with a marginally corrupt police dept, and perhaps a lot of not so conservative people moving in. Felony charges against a white teen-aged boy for harassing and injuring cyclists are a bold step for the DA. I hope s/he survives their next election.

  17. Building Session this Saturday morning at 9:00am. The County has approved a new section of trail that goes from the intersection of Rim and Bob Ross over to the Jeep Road. The plan for Saturday is to remove brush, trim trees, remove stumps, harvest rocks for a creek crossings, and start work on a major bench cut. Meet at the intersection of Rim and Bob Ross at 9:00am. Bring gloves, water, rakes, saws, and pickaxes.
