  1. I have a few mounts that should work, it that looks like a good option too. A diving light is a diving light if you use it for diving. If you strap it on your bike, it's now a bike light. Bonus feature: no need to worry about it if you fall in a Creek or get caught in a downpour.
  2. Read more carefully. That's a photo of the Shimano version, but the details say it's a XD hub. They probably sold out of the Shimano version and only have the XD ones left.
  3. Just ordered a Sofirn SD05 from Amazon. Under $50 with a big li-ion cell and charger. Really just a big flashlight. Spec are over-stated, of course, I have have no reason to doubt that it will be anything less than a monster next to my current lights. Will report back after a ride.
  4. Beware- looks like XD driver only for that price. How much does a proper Shimano cost? Might still be worth it.
  5. That all makes sense. Thanks for all the perspectives, folks. I can easily amount the brighter light on my head and use the XL cable to put the battery in my jersey pocket or something. I have mounted the battery on my helmet before and didn't care for the extra weight up there. The last issue is that my lights are just not that bright. The Lumina 550 is fine for road riding but not so much for night trail riding. The Lumina 750 was pretty darn bright when I bought it 6+ years ago, but I am sure I can afford something more advanced now.
  6. I see what you're saying and it inspired me to try something: I have my helmet light, which is less powerful, pointed more upward and use it to look down the trail. I have my more powerful handlebar light pointed more directly in front of my tire. I'll try reversing those. I do feel the need to have as much light directly in front of me for navigating ledges and loose stuff so I can make micro adjustments. The segment where this posed the biggest problem was a narrow, ledgy, twisty, overgrown downhill segment near HOL, and it's possible that nothing would have made that part less sketchy other than slowing down. But who's got time for slowing down?
  7. I have tried a few iterations of lights lately. mostly SATN rides, but last night riding BCGB was a much harier experience. I used to be terrified of BCGB but nothing about it scares me now. what does bug me is mandatory hike-bike routes and loose terrain downhills with insufficient lighting and line-of-sight in the dark. but that sketchiness is part of what made it fun! I started with the MiNewt 750 on the handlebar but the off-center position and shadows from the brake hoses always bugged me: then I figured out how to mount the same light on the front of the stem: finally, I bought a bracket on ebay for under $10, it gets the light higher and further forward, but the front tire still casts a shadow on the trail in in front of me: I think I am going about this wrong. a light on my head and on my handlebar still produces a very flat light. what I probably need is another light on my handlebar, and space them out a few inches from the center. that would create a binocular kind of vision and the two lights would cancel out the shadows that each creates. thinking out loud: two self-contained lights (how bright?), single battery pack with two heads on it, or just throw whatever extra light on the bar? anyone using two handlebar lights for this reason?
  8. Is this still on every week? I just called TWC at 5:15 pm and no one picked up. Edit- they called me back promptly and confirmed the rode is on.

  10. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the water that slimes up the gulley on the way to the creek. Sounds like that has become more of a problem and an indication that people don't know how to irrigate without wasting water.
  11. Has anyone approached the Powers about diverting that water to the creek in a less problematic way?
  12. Traitor Crusade, Cowbell bar, TRP Hylex brakes, Arch EX rims, 38/16 gear, 35mm Gravelkings. This bike gets ridden everywhere I can find that's not too chunky. Fun on pavement, hardpack, and gravel paths.
  13. Go to REI and try on a pack. Ask to borrow some of the beanbag weights they keep in the backpacking section and load up the pack to see how it fits.
  14. One horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?
  15. Maybe it's just me. That big kale smoothie I had for breakfast has residual after-effects hours later.
  16. Guidelines for writing guidelines: use as few words as possible. Hack words down like ragweed encroaching on the trail. Hack until short!
  17. BikeALot hosted one time at their previous location. That will be a great spot for a social gathering when the new Quack's finally opens too.
  18. No really, I have commented multiple times about riders standing around, blocking the driveway behind ATX Bikes, pissing off drivers. There are plenty of places to stand around and get stoked, but they choose the spot the inconveniences our neighbors until the event gets shut down. I am done with trying, just waiting for my chance to say "told ya so."
  19. No. But this is pretty close. A few people have done very long, single rides and posted them on Strava. Study any of those, or the three routes that Tip posted in the SATN Social thread that those about cover it. Throw in Mary Moore Seawright too.
  20. Last time I checked, bikes are technically not allowed in Stephenson. Dogs are not allowed either. However, there is almost not signage declaring such, no enforcement, and plenty of riding going on in there. And dog-walking. Keep it low key and it will probably remain tolerated.
  21. My MiNewt is perched directly on top of my handlebar. This position puts the light behind the brake hoses on my bike and, try as I might, there seems to be no practical way to reposition the hoses to avoid the shadows that creates. So I'd like to reposition the headlight. I have a secondary light on my helmet that is fine where it is. What model, brackets, alternatives have you tried to raise and push forward your handlebar light? I see a ton of generic versions of brackets like the one below, how well do those work?
  22. I have spent quite a bit of time in the horsefly lair lately. The scourge seems to have passed.
