1. Very cool bike. Can't wait for you to get it and post some pictures on the trail. I do have a question for those of you in the know. How can heat treatment be optional? As I understand it, Chromium steel alloys have to be heat treated. That is the main reason SCCA banned these alloys for club racing instead mandating much thicker mild DOM steel.
2. Upgrades: Manitou R-Seven fork recently serviced by me Hope hubs front and rear Stan’s ZTR 355 front rim setup tubeless Rhyno Lite rear rim (I built this wheel to be stout) has the Stan’s tape but could not get the Specialized FastTrack tire (new) I think because this rim is too wide. It has a tube now but I’ll throw the new stan’s Valve. Shimano LX triple crank setup 2x with bash ring shimano XTR 9 speed truvativ noir T30 bar Shimano front hydraulic disk rear brake is rim with Tektro lever this bike weighs 27lbs. It could be less with a lighter rear wheel, I just wanted to build one that was bulletproof. if I’d been thinking more clearly I would have built the rear wheel with the ZTR and gotten a new disc only rim. It is hard finding v brake compatible 26” rims now. $250 firm. If I can’t sell it for this price I will set it back to stock and sell the parts.
3. Thanks for educating us cxagent. If you guys ever get a chance to do trail work with cxagent, you will not be sorry. He's always teaching. We got a chance to do some work with cxagent during Cranksgiving and my kids got a few lessons on trimming and such.
4. Better than arguing with certain people about inane things! At least we're discussing cool/weird bike things here and nerding out.
5. I downloaded the picture really zoomed in and counted the teeth. It's a 38th big ring on the crank (weird size I know). I also counted the two cogs on that "idler" cassette. I'm pretty sure 28t and 32t are right. I hadn't realized there was a cable on that upper derraileur. I thought it was being used as a tensioner. The small gear looks to be a 15t by my count. The only one I couldn't count was the cassette on the wheel, but it doesn't look like a very large one. It looks like the one on my road bike (11-25). 38:15:12 for top speed 7.36:1 final ratio Not even a 60t chainring with 11t cog would compare. 28:28:? If it's a 25, that's a ~1.3:1 ratio. A 27 would be ~1.18:1. A 32 would be 1:1 ratio I want to see the cockpit on this thing! If they wanted low gearing, then a MTB triple would be way better with a <1 ratio possible with a 22t granny in a triple crankset. If they wanted high gearing, then, this is one way to do it I guess. But so is this 🙂 https://www.velonews.com/2016/09/news/ca-woman-rides-her-bicycle-147-mph-a-new-world-record_420507 Ultimately, it seems like an art bike and pretty cool if it works, but seems highly impractical.
6. Dis and disc brakes are the main reason I want to update my 13 year old road bike. I have severe wrist pain toward the end of 100 mile rides from the shifting on the regular ultegra levers. Having been involved in the world of RC planes and cars 20 years ago, I always wondered why they didn’t use a servo to shift gears on a bike. It just makes sense.
7. 38t chainring 28t cog 32t cog as 2nd chainring Looks like maybe standard 11-25 or 12-27 cassette There is no reason for that complexity. By my calculations (coffee still fully not kicked in) that gives them final ratio of 1.61 (assuming 27t cog) to 3.94 (assuming 11t cog). A road triple 53/39/30 would give them a bigger range. Shoot, even a compact 50/34 would be better.
8. I love mine too and it’s already 5 years old. I just ordered new bushings for the pivots. I see myself upgrading my SS or road bike before my Czar. @loop_out build a little pump track or skills section in your yard to keep you motivated on the yard work.
9. Thanks! Bikepacking is exactly what I was thinking about.
10. From Kathy (this applies to Dirty Dozen race only):
11. I'm waiting on an e-mail from Kathy. The closest weather station shows only a little bit of rain last weekend, and a tiny bit (0.01") this week. But rain is expected tonight and tomorrow. Not that much, but from what John said, it seems like it's all super-saturated and swamped like in 2010.
12. I own this box set. It's awesome!

14. Has anyone asked yet if they have one in red?
15. nuke proof but not UPS proof? Sorry..couldn't resist. Hope you get some money back. That's what I'd angle for.
16. This is bad...but I guess what's to do with all the rain but to pun? (I don't have one)
17. I have 2 of the BR straps. I love them for race day, but with an exposed tube, it's going to degrade. I guess Stan's means we don't get to use those spare tubes often, but when I eventually did, my tube was rotted. The dirt in there is not that big a deal, though it is something extra to clean. I've gone back to a saddle bag, but I'd consider the frame mount instead since it's a bit more guarded.
18. Water for 1hr rides some of the time. Mostly Infinit custom year round. Lower sodium mix in the winter, high sodium in the summer. Both with protein. Every 3rd bottle (i.e. every 3rd hour) with high sodium and no protein. I had to go to reduced sodium in the winter since I was finishing rides heavier than when I started them due to water retention. I can do no-protein for short rides (3hrs or less) but definitely need protein for longer than 3 hour rides. I tired Nuun a while back but I kept getting the runs. They used to be made with Sorbitol which acts like a laxative for some people (so do a lot of the Mangnesium salts like Oxide, so watch out for high Magnesium content mixes). Apparently Nuun are no longer made with Sorbitol. Usually on 100+ mile rides, I'll do a half PB&J an hour or two from the finish. Mostly for psychological reasons.
19. Loved it and the music. Watching those bikes flexed under load, and how they mount the bike is amazing. I'll keep this in mind next time I think about whining about work.
20. The video takes on a new light after reading how Aaron was treated. With friends like that... https://www.pinkbike.com/news/aaron-gwin-on-his-break-with-yt-and-becoming-a-team-owner.html?utm_source=PBMAIN&utm_campaign=be437b2dfd-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_10_05_08_24_COPY_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_0e91f74851-be437b2dfd-102045421
21. Picked up a 19" TT Sunday for my son at Buck's Bikes. He loves the thing. It's already banged up from him trying manuals and other stuff...but that thing gets scratched up and keeps going, unlike the MTB which I kept having to fix. I'm pleased with the quality and stoutness so far. Incidentally, on the first ride, he was going up the hill on our street and the chain snapped (he weighs 96lbs). It looked like a bad rivet job since both side plates came off the rivet and the rivet stayed on the journal. I took the chain back to Buck's and they gave me a replacement (offered to pay the difference for a KMC) right away.
22. Same here. Country rides are OK, in-town rides are OK. Suburbs in the flatlands are scary. I used to ride out to Andice on Parmer/RR all the time. I totally understand those who don't want to do it on the road anymore. Half the time I get on my smart trainer instead of heading out. I also think I gain fitness when not riding on trails.
23. I released all the lever travel to max. I was shocked at how far I had it in. Then I took the caliper off the bike and let it hang right under the lever. So many bubbles came out. I used less than one little cup full of fluid to get it feeling really solid. We'll see if that lasts after some use. Looking forward to seeing how your experience went AB. I figured you're busy editing pictures and such.
