  1. I dont like working on my bike, but I do like to save money. There isnt much to maintain on a bike and most bike maintenance is very easy. The hardest part is taking apart any of the bearings stuff, cleaning, and regreasing. Shock maintenance is a pain, but not that often. I dont work on stuff regularly, just when I have to. I bought a used wahoo kickr and built a permanent partial bike from spare parts. Wouldnt have been able to do that without having worked on my bikes before. As I get new frames I pull all the parts from an old bike and then spread them out across other bikes and onto the new bike. I think it would be hard to have a shop do that in a cost effective way. I regularly get good deals on used hubs and then buy chinese carbon rims and build the wheelsets myself. It takes about an hour or two per wheel, easily worth doing myself.
  2. dont use your coupon, just bring it in and say it has a problem
  3. https://my.rouvy.com/en rouvy does virtual rides but with video. No trails, but seems like good scenery
  4. added a shifter to my bike so I can ride outside of erg mode. What seems to work well is running a training program first and then continuing to ride in regular mode after. What kind of power are people getting? It seems like Im around an FTP of 180, but I can hold 250 for 3-4 minutes. What do I need to be able to generate to ride up jester/yaupon/courtyard at not a snails pace? I feel like a roadie, but at least Im getting some ride time in. I also appreciate how the roadies monitor power, heart rate, and cadence to optimize fitness.
  5. have you looked for used on ebay? Lots of people still dumping great wheelsets for cheap. You can also find great craigslist deals if you watch regularly. I generally just look for good deals on hubs then get chinese carbon rims. I just bought some rims for about 170/each and will build them with i9 torch hubs that I bought used from seth.
  6. all this rain is making EB training really difficult so I bought a wahoo kickr trainer used ($550) and connected it to zwift so I could get some training rides in. I don't like riding on the road at all but Ive been getting zero trail time. I wasnt sure what the minimum bike you need is and couldnt find any info about it, so I thought Id post here. A new version came out so people are starting to upgrade. The guy I bought it from has a team of guys that are upgrading. It turns out you barely need any bike to run this thing, here is what you need Frame Stem Fork (rigid is fine) Bar/grips Crank + ring Pedals Chain Fork mount (or a front wheel) Fan The bike has "erg" mode which adjusts the resistance automatically so shifting isnt necessary. The one caveat is you can only use erg mode when doing a training workout. So you can ride the same virtual routes but will be following a training plan. If you try to ride normally it doesnt seem like you can do erg mode and so you would want a shifter (or just ride single speed). Ill probably end up putting a shifter on so I can do the regular rides without doing a training workout. I have a front wheel on the bike for now, but have ordered a fork mount and will just mount the fork to a wooden box. This will reduce the front profile as there wont be a wheel sticking out. I have only ridden for 15 minutes last night to test the system, but it seemed to work great and was tough.
  7. I did, but we never really managed to play much. We mostly hung out instead. I have to say my youth and friends was pretty much just like stranger things. If you want to see what kind of people play, you can go to the gamer shop on anderson ln (dragons lair?)
  8. My dad was a professor at UIUC and then started his own company and so I had access to the PLATO network which was a graphical networked computer system that predates the internet. They had very addictive graphical multi user games in the early 80s (I was about 12 at the time). My dad had multiple employees that dropped out of the CS PhD program because they were so addicted to a game called avatar. He was worried about that for me and so never had a single computer at home. I still managed to play at my high school (which had a terminal) before and after school and many times for 48 hours straight at his office. Because Ive always played multiplayer games at such a young age, I skipped the entire single player game revolution of the late 80's/90s because they were boring in comparison. I then never really got into games once multiplayer games became mainstream. My two oldest, 10 & 5, love roblox, so much so that I have had to restrict internet access from 6am to 7:30am each day. This means they choose to go to bed early so they can get up early to play before school. One requirement is that they are fully dressed and ready for school, which they are every single day. Before this it was a struggle to get them up in the morning. Another requirement is that they do extra math, reading, and guitar practice. In addition, I can pretty much get them to do anything extra without complaint by offering up more internet time. If you aren't using it to your advantage you are missing out. My dad also would regularly say playing games is a waste of time, but building them is incredibly valuable. So I did build a popular game on that system. I also wrote the first online texas holdem game which I stupidly failed to monetize. I have offered my kids unlimited roblox time if they choose to build games.
  9. Im looking for a BSA hollowtech II compatible bottom bracket and a standard 1 1/8 stem for a standard mountain bike bar. Any length is probably ok.
  10. dont want to waste a suspension fork for this. This is a spare frame I have laying around.
  11. I agree he is a moron. But his behavior isnt going to chase anyone off and he pretty much says shit that he would say to you in person. One nice thing about mojo was that it was not PC. In any case, he was just responding to an insult Finally, if you ban insults, what is left?
  12. putting together an indoor trainer so wheel size mostly doesnt matter. 1 1/8 tapered steerer tube. Free would be ideal 🙂
  13. im definitely behind in my training and just realized im on vacation for 3 weekends between now and the EB. Dont know if I will be ready. I pretty much died on jester, having to stop at least 3 times. I did see austin bike, albert, and shane.
  14. el gato seems to drain pretty well, as do other trails in the same area.
  15. 85 degrees just opened and is much better than tour les jour

  17. supposedly you can hang fake wasps nests and wasps wont build in the vicinity. Not sure how true that is.
  18. tums with magnesium which stops cramps and doesnt take up much space like pickle juice and mustard. tubeless tire plug kit.
  19. I heard that carbon bars might not be that safe but Im not sure. Asking for a friend.
  20. Dont know if i will be ready to ride, but did my first training ride today and it hurt. Did about 30 road miles not including courtyard/jester/yaupon and BCGB main trail. Doing 2 of the trails each week plus one big ride 30, 35,40,45,50, 60
  21. you actually have something like 1500 calories worth of glycogen in your muscles and another 400 or so in your liver. I personally like around 100-150 calories per every 50 minutes, with a couple of small meals with probably 400 calories all at once. An hour is generally too long for some reason. For electrolytes I like 50% gatorade/water, but for the really long rides the sugar is too much and there arent enough electrolytes. I keep tums with mg for cramp emergencies. I can get hit the wall cramps and tums will clear them up in about 15 minutes.
  22. you can get a small backup battery and keep your phone charged for most of the ride until the spare battery runs out, then use the phone battery.
  23. Get the latex mold at michaels using a 50% off coupon Mix with drill is my paint stirrer drill attachment that I use to mix.
