June Bug Posted May 19, 2024 Share Posted May 19, 2024 Non-mountain biking friends (in the 60 to 70 yr old range) who have done extended bike touring in Europe, New Zealand, Japan bought e-bikes this past year. Their bikes are Specialied S-Works somethings, they swapped out the drop bars for flat bars and added 1.9" tires with a smooth rolling tread. They set it up so the battery is external and not inside the frame. This lets them pack the battery in a carry on when they fly with their bikes. At day's end, one can carry the battery inside a hotel room for charging. We did a partly gravel (caliche!) road ride with them in the Round Mountain area a few weeks ago, and I picked up one of the bikes -- it's 30ish pounds, if that -- feather light. They are in Spain/Portugal right now and reported that the bikes are doing great on some incredibly steep roads. They anticipate getting about 60 miles from one charge, depending on terrain. Side note: Google "e-bike + solar panels". Taco Man Posted January 7 Share Posted January 7 I leave my ebike (RadRunner) in the garage no battery issues, its about 50 in there. I also dont ride it all that often- once a month to tool around or pick up a quick something at grocery. In my case I could pop the battery out easy enough and bring inside, never thought about it. Ridenfool Posted January 7 Share Posted January 7 As I understand it, It is only charging or operation in extreme cold without prewarming the battery that might be an issue. Storage, not so much of a worry. Generally, for long-term storage keeping the battery charged at 75% or so is optimal. Never leave a lithium battery on the charger longer than necessary to reach a full charge as that can reduce the lifespan of the battery. Every battery may have it's own idiosyncrasies, so the definitive answer will be found in the documentation that came with the bike.
