  1. Crank ring bolts were just removed, cleaned and replaced this weekend, then it creaked again.
  2. I do run a lock through my wheel locks to make it a bit harder:
  3. With all of the bike thefts this week I started wondering about my bike. I use a 1up rack which is locked to the hitch. I also have the wheel locks that I use whenever I am not in sight of the bike. If I ever had to leave a bike overnight I also use a cable and padlock (but only leave cheap commuters overnight, not the expensive stuff. Anyway, anyone know of someone that had a bike stolen off a 1-up where they were using the wheel locks?
  4. Having a real problem with my 2014 Kona Unit singlespeed. I have ~10,000 miles on it based on Strava so it gets real use, but primarily on the streets, not the trails. About 6-8 months ago it developed a creak. Or more accurately a series of creaks. I have been replacing components but am running out of options. Here's what I have replaced so far: Front cog Rear cog Chain Bottom bracket Pedals Rear freehub The creak comes from the rear half of the bike. It is not the seat post, it happens if I stand. If I am pushing hard up a hill it does not happen, but only happens when I am pedaling. Here's the weird part: I get on the bike and start riding, it is silent. At about 15 miles the sound starts, by 20 miles it is awful. Then the next morning, I start riding, silent again. One of the last things left could be the rear wheel. If I want to see if it is the spokes, I know I can put some drops of oil on the spoke holes of the hub and where the spokes cross each other. Going to try that. Any other options?
  5. Did a ton of walking in Zurich but never got a bike while I was there. Mountains are beautiful, if you want altitude you'll get get it there.
  6. Ran into a ton of Pivots on SN, so it definitely happened. If you got to try the trail 429 it was probably an expensive demo because everyone I know that rides that bike ends up buying it, they're sweet.
  7. Rode a bunch of brushy today, was impressed by how dry it was. A couple puddles on mulligan but the rest was excellent.
  8. 7 pages and he's created zero content. Publishing is hard. That is why I get behind on my site, I have actual paying writing jobs so my free stuff hits the back burner. At this point we should all just say put up or shut up. Let us know when the first version is out on the streets (and laugh at us) or just let this die. My guess is there will be 37 more replies before that happens.
  9. Yeah, Jack and Adam's, then lost touch. He surfaced again at City Limits cycle (mobile service) then bought into the VeloFix world.
  10. Sorry, I forgot to use the word "dry", I know the trails well.
  11. Wife went to high school with the guitarist. We got decent seats and backstage passes when they came to Austin last time. Literally the last time I guess.
  12. Feels like a demo on concrete is the wrong way to test a pivot, those bikes need dirt.
  13. I have had James Balentine build me wheels over the year and they are always the strongest and never go out of true. Not sure exactly how to get a hold of him these days, but he runs a velofix franchise here in Austin. https://www.velofix.com/locations/austin/ I'd ping them and see how to get James to build you some wheels. As an added benefit, they come to you, which is really worth a lot.
  14. Yeah, very interesting. Makes me think of a few things. First, that same concept in Sweden is alive in England. You can literally walk across anyone's property lines. "Ramblers" go for walks on the weekends and literally just plow across fields and open gates to access paths. Lots of fighting about it but ultimately it is allowed. On the other end of the spectrum is Sourth Korea. We wave occasionally but there everyone bows. Literally every time you pass them. Even if they are riding uphill. Pretty weird. When it comes to horses I totally get it. So many riders think they can skirt past a horse, but I tend to dismount because I know it is really easy to spook a horse. You don't want 1,000 pounds of out of control meat with hard hooves bouncing around, it will crush your bike. As an community there is always an asshole in every town and that person does far more damage than we can ever make up. It's sad but it is so hard to reach these people. Typically they are new riders who watch Red Bull rampage and think that is what it is all about. The entitlement of that crowd is strong.
  15. I'd be interested in a long weekend (maybe 4 days of riding) as a "forum weekend." Don't want to go through the logistics of trying to get everyone on the same page for lodging, etc. but I would love to say "hey, May 10-13 be in Bentonville and we will all ride." Let everyone sort out their own logistics; we all get there we all ride.
  16. Public shaming goes a long way, I think it is a good idea. There are 2 FB groups, one on trail conditions and one on over MTB in Austin. The minute it rains people are all over "how fast will this dry", literally the same day. I blame energy drinks and prescription commercials that show people riding in the mud and smiling. We need to counter balance that.
  17. OK, WC is wet and the weather is not looking optimistic for some quick drying. Let's give the trails some time to dry out. Urban R&I tonight, starting at Oskar Blues, departing @ 5:30 sharp. We'll do some urban riding (primarily bike lanes) and then swing back to the brewery. Food truck on site AND Tuesday is $2 canned beer night. What could be more fair?
  18. Yeah, I know I helped keep the business flowing for many years. Would be good to see a shelter of sorts, give me somewhere in the shade to have my post ride beer.
  19. Lake leatherwood. Basically it was a 15-minute descent and when we got there the shuttle pulled right up. We got in about 6 or so runs in less than 2 hours.
  20. Eh, I'd want to see a real concerted effort to build a new one before I would lift a finger. Can't believe that a new saloon would be a good idea based on the low traffic flow. If the old one couldn't make it, it's doubtful someone would try to build a new one.
  21. What is the brand? When I had a Thule rack I was able to buy new arms that allowed it to expand from 26" tires to 29" tires. With the brand someone could google whether they can replace the arms. I don't need the rack, just trying to help you get it into the hands of someone that could use it.
  22. Did the shuttle. It was great. Really behind in getting it on my site. Sadly, few pictures because we were all going too fast with no stopping.
  23. Good job. I'd guess 90% of the people who need to make lifestyle changes take it seriously for about 3-4 weeks then give up. Inertia is a bitch, glad you stuck with it.
  24. Definitely need to get out there. On my list for trail reviews.
