  1. I've had the Sysyphus and other barleywines. They're good, but they're not my preferred style. I like a clean crisp finish. Have you tried Real Ale's 25oz bottles? The Commisar Russian Imperial Stout, the Red King Imperial Red Ale, and Black Quad Quadruppel are pretty good. I'm not into Shandys either. I like some sours but I'm super picky, and I couldn't put into words what makes one good and one makes the others not good to me.
  2. Naked Nun from Adelbert's (though I had a Trippel B the night before) Knob Creek single barrel Rye Corazon single estate reposado tequila Normally I don't do too much of the liquor, but sometimes I want something less filling. It's very unusual for me not to have Real Ale Devil's Backbone in the fridge. On our December family trip to SF, I discovered North Coast's brewing Brother Thelonious and I can get it here in Austin which is awesome. Hmm...need to go pick some up.
  3. Just curious, how many of you that have had the axles back out use a torque wrench to tighten them? Are these the ones with the lever or the ones where you need a hex wrench? I switched to the maxles instead of the DT Swiss levers. I find it hard to torque down with the small levers. Also, I have found that they threads get contaminated easily, and that a good amount of grease is needed if you're to torque it down properly. If you put it in dry (let's see what you can do with that one Mojos) it's hard to get it properly tight.
  4. Funny thing is I saw the exact same thing happen at Muleshoe to someone else on a big group ride. It was almost a bad crash. Only the rider's really good handling skills saved them.
  5. I believe I still have 1-2 Performance Bike brand adjustable stems. I don't like riding on them long term, but they're pretty good for messing with fit. I'll check tonight if one is a 31.8mm.
  6. That's no joke right there. When I went to school here I didn't have a car. I rode those Cap Metro UT Shuttles everywhere and my roommates car when we had to go for groceries. When I moved back in 2003, it still felt like Austin as far as driving. Coming from Dallas, the pace was a bit slower, more friendly, sometimes a bit frustrating when you're used to going 10 over and still getting passed by other drivers. Now, it feels more like Dallas or Houston, with lots more aggressive drivers. I often wonder if it's drivers bringing a bad influence, or if it's just the result of longer more frustrating commutes. I think it's a bit of both.
  7. Y'all reminded me of the day I was mowing my yard in the summer in Richardson, TX, and I thought I'd been in the heat too long because a small tree was moving around in weird ways, with no wind. It turns out that tree was a small Box Elder, and it was completely covered in Box Elder bugs. I can't imagine what Oak Knoll must have looked like back in the 70's! I do live across from one of the original ranch houses in the NW Balcones area (built in the 50's I think). Most everything else got built out from the mid/late 70's to the 90's around here. I do remember in the early 90's going to Lakeline Mall to pick-up a tuxedo rental, and thinking to myself "why would they build a mall in the middle of nothing?". It all seemed like greenery from the highway.
  8. I was just thinking about Fixie Todd because he was another Mazda guy. IIRC he worked at Racing Beat for a while. I've been watching Mazda races new and old. Still in awe he did the EB on a Fixie.
  9. Tomac at Mammoth Kamikaze. Not sure of the year: https://forums.mtbr.com/california-norcal/mammoth-kamikaze-games-872186.html#post10676548
  10. I was looking at the 2nd group now between Abiquiu and Cuba, and thought I noticed a caldera. Sure enough! http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/volcanoes/valles-caldera-jemez-volcanic-field I want to go ride that area of the country.
  11. That sweet spot bar width article from LM is interesting. I'm currently at about 1.7% less than the sweet spot. Lee is riding at 1.3% less than his sweet spot. The bar width is easy to play with by moving the grips and controls in on a wide bar. But what about rise and sweep angles? Any similar rules-of-thumb for rise and sweep?
  12. Save those bars to replace the steel bars in little kids bikes. No reason why a 60lbs kids' bike should weigh 30lbs.
  13. I had some kids do that to me in my neighborhood. They stopped and taunted me after I almost ate it on my road bike. I dared them to come back. The adrenaline was rushing. I'm glad they didn't come back. Idiots. I don't know the details but I figured that's what happened with Tommy K.
  14. I love a Little Sumpin'. Probably the only Lagunitas beer I really like.
  15. I almost turned around and followed y'all, but I had more work waiting for me. It was a pleasant ride back to work though with very nice temps!
  16. When I was in high school I worked at Revco (I think Eckerd ended up buying them..wait, is Eckerd even around?). I remember road construction workers coming in for salt pills. I thought it was strange until one explained to me that this was the most efficient and cheap way for them to keep getting in trouble. They had plenty of water but no electrolytes. All the people that work outside or indoors without cooling (like auto mechanics in most shops) have my respect, but like AB said, those working in the attics take the prize. If I have any attic work to do, I do it in the winter. One time I had an extra 6" of insulation put in, and they came when it was hot (I figured they'd come in very early). They'd stay up there at a max of 20 minutes and switch out, and they'd disconnect AC ducts where possible to get some direct cool air on them (part of what they did was sealing all the ducts and registers).
  17. I noticed that. I wonder if they have friends or family there?
  18. 6, 12, and 24Hr Terra Firma XC races start with at least a 0.25mi run. I don't mind running but I hate running with cleats, especially on those round pebbles at Warda and RHR. I think I've watched this video 10x and it is not getting old at all. Thanks for posting it!
  19. Forgot to wish you a happy birthday when I saw y'all on the NWCT!
  20. All 3 people that I saw with muddy bikes and/or come off the trail were notified. One person I told about this forum to get trail conditions and very cordially let them know volunteers fix the ruts after people ride in the mud.
