  1. This is spot on: "Experts have pointed out repeatedly that more vegetation and a return to the bayou's natural meandering nature (as opposed to straight, concrete gullies) provides a much greater defense against flooding. But, thanks to shortsighted policies and unchecked development, we only exacerbate the problems and put wonderful, natural treasures like the anthills on the chopping block for no reason." Also, please use the "paste as plain text" for us weirdos that like dark mode.
  2. There was enough of a gap through the branch barriers (on the dirt trail, not the concrete trail) today around noon. I still saw the concrete guys but they didn't yell at us this time. Are they going to leave that pile of concrete for a trials course?
  3. Do you guys know Jose? 1000 mile Iditarod on a + bike https://www.facebook.com/JoseBermudezRAAM2013/
  4. Now I want to do it. I'm wondering if it would get high-sided on the A-frame bridges though.
  5. When can we meet? This weekend we'll be at Rocky Hill for the NICA race.
  6. I'm reading it in the voice of Ray Liotta's Henry Hill from Goodfellas, when he reminisces.
  7. I've been in my unheated (but worklights help!) garage building the Skills with Phil beginner ramps. Of course, before I began the garage needed a full clean-up and de-clutter session.
  8. Just make sure you're not doing it on a super-bright-orange rare custom made bike when you do it. That article was a good read! The guy was troubled.
  9. As long as there is racing of any kind and more than one person doing it, there will be cheating. It would probably be enforced like it is in RC car racing. You look at number of turns in the motor as a limit. Of course it will start with no rules, until someone puts a 9-turn motor in there or an on-off switch or whatever. I had a picture of some old (1970s) SCCA GCRs that were 3/8" thick and about 5X6" stacked on top of a 2005 GCR which was 9X7" or so and 3" thick. In between you had guys doing all kinds of cheats and more rules were added to prevent those. That's the story of racing. If you guys are into it, I highly recommend Mark Donohue's "The Unfair Advantage".
  10. Have you guys checked the calibration on them?
  11. They're so awesome! I saw them only once at ACL Fest, probably close to 15 years ago. I love how they altered the lyrics (not a straight translation of the original.)
  12. I thought they were contractors.
  13. I can tell you that's exactly what they thought. The one guy implied that trail had been added after the started pouring the concrete. My impression from the guy's anger was that it came out of their pocket.
  14. My 2010 Talas is still in use on my wife's bike. The Kashima coating got worn out after 10k+ miles. I sent it in to Fox for a full rebuild and new uppers for $400. I always ran it at 120mm so that feature was no particularly useful to me and with hindsight I would have skipped it.
  15. If I'm correct, that new section that seems to dead-end doesn't actually. Was this a section that goes along the creek with some blue flags? At some point before it seems to dead-end, there's a right turn at the bottom of a g-out, and you ride on the dry creek bed for a while before looping back to the start of this new loop.
  16. Do they go through a stage where it's more a chore to get them to do yardwork than to do it yourself and then get better past some age? I got a 12yo and 14yo. The 14yo will get motivated and work hard once he gets started, but getting him started is a problem. The 12yo, forget it. Regarding machetes, I have a Fiskars and I'm not impressed with the factory sharpness. Is it a normal thing to have to sharpen them? Do they make them kind of dull on purpose?
  17. I measured clearance to a 29X2.3 Specialized Ground Control very new tire. I hope that's OK. I can also measure the narrow point actual width without a wheel in place, but I'm not sure if you're going 29" or 27.5. All the way around (left, right, and top) the narrowest point was 14.6mm. I measured with an inside-diameter tool so it's pretty accurate. Note that the narrow spot was not at the widest part of the tire, but rather at the seals portion of the fork. This includes the front brake hose clamp.
  18. I know that at least one person told them they should have blocked it to begin with!
  19. We rode out there at lunch. While Honeybadger was blowing leaves off the trail, the contractors were cutting up and tearing that concrete section into pieces. We got yelled at (we were not riding on the concrete, we were on the trail) getting blamed for their $5k concrete. Watch out for wet concrete again. Hopefully this time they block it off and put a "wet concrete" sign. Oh yeah, Peddlers is in primo shape thanks to Honeybadger. Go get some today!
