A couple of things:

Electric assist bicycles are expensive, particularly e-MTBs.  This will limit the number of people who buy one and especially ones who buy it as their only mountain bike.

Next, who here commenting has any experience on an electric assist mountain bike?  Or even simply an electric assist bike?  I've ridden an e-assist mountain bike and owned an e-assist commuting bike.  From my experience, someone with little to no mountain biking experience will learn shortly after the first turn that he cannot go all out all the time.  Yes, one will be able to ride faster in many cases but not in technical or twisty terrain or on tight trails.  In technical terrain, timing the assist of the motor with your pedal rotation to clean an embedded rock or ledge will require a different skill than on a standard mountain bike.  Furthermore, trying to pull an e-assist bike up a ledge will be much more difficult than a standard bike probably resulting in one having to carry his bike up that feature.

All this doesn't matter much, as here in central TX, most land managers do not allow e-bikes.  For example, the City of Austin and Williamson County do not allow e-bikes on trails.

Apocryphal as some make it sound, e-MTBs are not going to ruin the sport that is our lifestyle.
