  3. I can tell you that the staff I encountered while getting carted off the mountain appeared well schooled and well equipped. They could have placed me on a stretcher had I not informed them I could limp up to the jeep trail on my own. They went through the concussion protocol even though I kept reminding them that I didn't crash, which I suppose is arguable since I didn't intentionally dismount my bike either. Gracefully landing on my feet after washing out ended up being my undoing, as a tuck and roll would have at least kept my hamstring intact. They also offered to arrange transport to a medical facility, which I suspect would be Seton Highland Lakes between Burrnet and Marble Falls. While they didn't take my keys away, they urged me not to attempt transporting myself and had me sign a release form, which I suppose had some additional language beyond the release I had already signed upon entrance to the park.

  5. That is good to hear. It is nice that they have experienced staff on hand to deal with the inevitable new member of the Over The Bars Scar Club. Sounds like you will also be joining the Loyal Order of the Itching Stitch, a rather exclusive club, generally with a steeper entry fee than the OTBSC. But, as far as establishing a trail rating based upon body count goes, I guess SM is at 1 then?

  9. Hey T sorry to hear this. On the bright side though, this is not your favorite time of year to ride.

  12. Eh, boutique specialty insurance is great, until you need it. What makes insurance affordable is tons of people who pay but don't need it. This type of specialty insurance would have a lot of people who are more likely to use the insurance, and when they do, there could be some pretty steep bills. Worse yet, if for some reason they say "not covered" you are really screwed. Insurance is a mess in this country and it needs to be scrapped and refreshed but this is the opposite direction. Think big pools minimize risk and minimize costs. Every time I am at the doctor I am surrounded by people who walk in, those are the cheapest ones to treat. You definitely don't want to be picking up the slack of the life flight folks. That being said, "GAS UP THE CHOPPER"

  15. I did some field testing on the Omni-Freeze over the weekend. While chainsawing and loading wood in a field (get it? field testing?). I was wearing a Columbia long sleeve fishing shirt that held sweat like nobody's business. It had vents, and mesh lining, and had originally promised to move sweat when purchased years ago. After a couple of hours of this work my shirt, pants, socks and fruit of the looms were soaked through. Wringing wet. Time of day 0600-0800 Weather: cloudy, high humidity. After a quick change into long jeans shorts, Omni-freeze, and some dry Fruit o'TLs I started shoveling wheelbarrow loads of mulch for the next couple of hours. 0900-1100, Weather: slightly reduced humidity, and now oscillating between partly cloudy and direct sun. The shirt was moist, but not saturated like the first shirt was. I was cooler and wasn't soaking my shorts and the fruit they covered as would usually be the case. On occasion I could feel a breeze significantly reduce temps on the shirt, and remember thinking how promising this might be on a moving bike. If I were to ever find time to ride. Damn chores. Preliminary results have been positive. Smart Watch indicated about 4000 steps for each work period and indicates a reasonable comparison. More testing to come.

  16. Now just need to stuff a cooler in some shrubs. Say you gotta stop for a nature break, then pull a couple cold ones from the bushes.

  17. I have a Kona Private Jake setup for "gravel". It's basically a modified road bike setup with wider tires, flat bar, etc. I rode it at Walnut and almost suffered kidney injuries. It was BRUTAL, and Walnut is tame.

  18. I've only just realized how the most important bit of data is missing from @throet's report. 😲 Is the bike okay?

  19. The MRI went well I guess but I won't know the results until tomorrow. I'm trying to be optimistic but it's really hard. The doc put me on crutches yesterday and told me I really should not be bearing any weight on the leg. I did really heavy icing for the first 48 hours but there is still a massive amount of swelling 5 days post injury. Also turning purple now.

  20. Finally got out to Spider Mtn with my new Trek Remedy. Had a few great runs and the bike performed flawlessly. Unfortunately on my fourth run I washed out on a loose turn. Managed to land on my feet but instantly went into a freak split. Felt a pop in my groin and then excruciating pain. Had to be carted off the mountain. Looking forward to getting back out but I'm guessing it's going to be a couple of months to recover.
