  2. That's correct, there is no consistent policy. Cairns certainly have a scenario where they can be helpful, like on trails systems without many signs. SATN is a great example where those visual makers are helpful. Another good use of Cairns is were the absolute Cairn cities would (or do they still? ) pop up when the BC Greenbelt creek was dry. Dozens of stacks artfully places 6+ feet and taller. And like sandcastles, the water removes them eventually. But stacking rocks that'll just stay like that for no purpose? It's like, if you're going to graffiti, make something beautiful out of something grotesque (like on many SATN structures and overpasses, instead of just shitty tagging). So I lean to the "leave no trace" side here when it comes to nonsensical reorganization of roks. Not today, hippy!

  6. 1996 BCGB on a Y-22. I had moved to Austin for school and it was my first chance to explore on my own. I remember riding Townlake trail and asking some guys where to get on the greenbelt. They pointed me to the Barton Springs entrance and I remember them saying, "good you have full suspension, because you will need it". Took me a while before I finally rode a proper full-suspension bike that would actually smooth out the trail.

  7. BCGB 1998, brought my sister's giant iguana from home to ride. Had a blast. That bike lasted about 5 rides on the greenbelt. as soon as i got out of school and had a job, I bought my Gary Fisher Sugar. Full Sus ever since.

  8. Barton Creek Greenbelt from 360 to Zilker back in 1991. Still ride the trail. It was less technical. Also did a race at City Park in December of '91. Some guy named Lance won. Every Saturday I'd ride some Greenbelt and then do a loop at City Park back then. I was young and single.

  9. I tried this. Maybe 10 years ago I bought a 1994 Rockhoper. It was in pristine condition (other than tires and brake pads being dry) with original clean chain grease. Someone bought it back then maybe rode it once on the street and hung it up. I replaced the parts and rode it at WC. It was not enjoyable.

  11. At the top of Cairn Me Up at Glorieta, NM (experimenting with a different way to post a picture. Hope it works) Trying yet ANOTHER way. We had to take our bikes to the room because the place we had to park was sketchy

  12. A few of us came to camp & race at bluff creek / Warda around 95. A few months later came back with my wife to visit her family and rode BCGB and City Park and maybe the old rifle range by Reimer’s. Loved it all but dabbed tons. Second time ever riding city park was on a visit in 97 riding with a friend from home. we got caught in a storm midway thru a lap. It was the storm that had the tornado that wiped out 183/1431 in cedar park then hit Jarrell. We had no cellphones and no idea til we got back to our hotel. CP in the rain on a hardtail for 2 techie beginners was nutz!

  13. I moved back in 96', rode the Greenbelt a few times but mostly used my MTB to commute to work. I was playing about 54 holes of golf a week and playing soccer on Sundays. A kid in your life will take all that free time away, so it was easy to ride out my garage door onto trail and back in 60 minutes. I will give credit to the old BikeMojo forum for letting me learn about more trails.

  14. That would have to be Walnut Creek. Back in the late '80s or early '90s when about all I could find to ride there is what became the BMX loop. It was okay, but we decided it wasn't worth the hour drive to get there from Fayette County. It has been a few years since I've been there for an R&I. The people density on the trail and the traffic into and out of Austin are hassles this country mouse eschews for the quiet life in the sticks. I had ridden Emma Long once, a decade before that, on a dirt bike.

  15. I rode up Bishop's Lodge road and cut in at the bottom of Lower Winsor (first arrow). Then I did the climb up Burn which was aptly named (second arrow). At the top of the Ridgeline, I could have taken Saddleback north but opted for Juan south (third arrow). That dumped me out on 475, where I rode up and down to Dale Ball (squiggly line off 475) where I did a little 2-3 mile lap then headed back down into town to the house. 20 miles, 2100 feet of climbing.
