  1. woah woah woah! huge apples to oranges comparison youre making there. I dont have a problem with e-bikes either, but dont compare suspension and a dropper post to adding a motor to a bicycle. one of the biggest pride points about riding bicycles is that youre completely driven and propelled by your own generated human power. all that distance you just covered, or that huge mountain you just ascended - all done with your heart, lungs, and muscles. not a motor. you can add all the shocks and droppers and fancy bling components to your bike and its still a bicycle. but the moment you add a motor for propulsion its not longer a bicycle, its a motorized vehicle. the end if you crank up the far west blvd hill on a bike next to a guy riding an e-bike and you both set strava PRs at the top, the achievements arent the same. that being said I totally promote ebikes for people that arent able bodied, but if you are able bodied, you loose some points there

  2. Last Friday evening was too hot. The heat index was well above 100 degrees. I did some building at the entrance to Peddlers Pass (improving sightlines for those entering and exiting the trail). I was there longer than expected (3 hours). After 2.5 hours I started to see the 1st signs of heat exhaustion, no energy and a little nauseous. At 3 hours I recognized I better stop before it got worse. That night I threw up several times and felt like S!@#. I drank plenty of water and was working in the shade. I was really surprised at how quickly the symptoms started. Normally, my early warning symptom is a slight headache, when get that I stop. This time, no headache, straight to throwing up. Make sure you educate yourself on the symptoms.

  3. I have no intention of ever riding an E-Bike, but I hope if I ever have to ride one due to some medical condition that people are nicer to me when I am on one than I am to E-MTBers right now. Glass houses blah blah....

  4. I'm not sure anyone (including myself) would consider me "able-bodied" at this point, but I am still capable of riding a non-e-mtb. Every painful morning I wake up, I look more forward to the e-mtb w/pussification. Oh, and I'll flip you off too when I'm stopped on the trail adjusting my sports depends 🙂

  5. It's totally not weird to me. As long as you have water to drink, riding in those conditions is way more benign than riding in 80°F and 85% RH.

  6. Hi All, Rode Walnut Creek for the first time in about 3 weeks this weekend and noticed a change on the new-and-improved-and-less-likely-to-result-in-a-faceplant Root Drop. On the left-hand line, on about the second step down, there used to be a big rock just sort of sitting there, which made riding that line a little easier. The rock is now gone. Fine by me and all; I just wondered if anyone else had noticed. It made me wonder if that rock had been sort of like "training wheels" for the rebuilt feature (i.e. put there on purpose by the work crew) or if it had been placed there in an unsanctioned fashion by some random person. Either way, I'm glad I dismounted and had a look before attempting it this weekend. If I had gone over and not seen that big rock there like I expected it to be, I probably would have panic'd and gone OTB. As it was I had to re-psych myself up attempt it, but after a few minutes I gave it a try and made it. I'm sure glad Root Drop is back. -cls

  7. Ebikes are still propelled by pedals. If you take the pedals off an ebike, it will go the exact same speed as a regular bike with no pedals.

  8. Onewheels are definitely NOT bicycles. But they look like a lot of fun in those trail videos. Horses are not bicycles either. But I have seen both user groups enjoying the Slaughter Creek Trail. Oranges are not apples. But I like to eat both. Depends on my taste at the moment. A marathon is usually a race with rules. But I would be willing to bet someone has had fun riding a scooter 26.2 miles at one point. Perhaps this reticence to embrace this new technology has something to do with not wanting to share the trail with even more people. If we allow them then no doubt that will result in even more use. But for me I get a lot of joy out of seeing anyone enjoying the trails. Except horses. I feel that horses damage the trails. And the poop of course. But the damage thing goes back to my major concern about ebikes.

  9. I don't see it as a "bicycle". I see it as something with two wheels. So that satisfies my needs...

  10. You know how you watch those guys go up the climbs in their big ring...but it's hard to gauge how fast they're really going? I just set my fastest time up Far West where Lawson Craddock has the KOM. I'm slightly slower: /s My whole ride with a bunch of flat stuff didn't average 15.8mph!!

  11. Also, I have an old friend who is just getting back into biking and instead of getting a real bike he purchased an E-bike....I keep blowing him off to ride with him because I feel ashamed to be riding near him. Does this make me a bad person?

  12. Growing up in east TX, I always dismissed the dry/vs humid argument... that was until I moved to Phoenix for a few years, then moved here. Humidity is no joke. Now I try to avoid going further east than I-35 unless I absolutely have to... and I don't know how I ever lived in Houston 😬. Oh, and "heat index", aka "feels like", is a load of crap. For instance, 96° at 50% feels nothing like 108°; it feels like a sticky, disgusting, sweltering 96. Try setting an oven at about 180°, and run your dishwasher... open the DW during the dry cycle (about 150°, "heat index" around 180) with your face close to it... then do the same with the oven... feel the same? Nope. Try a taller gear until you make it; use momentum instead of just trying to pedal up. There's a video in my Youtube sig where I do it on a single speed (search "Sweaty Shorts").

  13. Yea last Friday was nasty. I was on 1/4 and had the flash of a headache come on then rapidly disappear. I'm no fool and called it a day. I was lethargic the rest of the afternoon. Likewise I was heavily hydrated but have learned from past mistakes to now recognize when to bail on a ride Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

  15. The Fox 34 at 120mm is a fantastic fork in Austin terrain and perfect for a light hardtail. Much better than my previous Pike. The StepCast version is one of the lightest 120mm forks that exist.

  16. Yessss. That autumn-like cool edge to the air. I’m sure tomorrow will be right back to blast furnace. But it was oh so delicious tonight. I just went to CO for 10 days. Rode Durango, Salida, Boulder, and Lake Pueblo. Played a lot of disc golf. It was ONE HUNDRED degrees in Denver. I played disc and never had to towel off my hand from copious sweating, used one water bottle as opposed to killing 2 32oz bottles in a round, and shirt was barely damp in the center. 10% humidity This humidity thing is REAL.

  17. I've riding almost daily at BC. Rode this evening and was pretty surprised at the amount of loose rocks in the trail. It was as if someone placed hundreds of rocks on the trails. I know it's because of the weather being drier and the ground somehow births rocks and rocks come loose but damn there are tons of rockage. And the weather was amazing Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

  19. Did some riding in CA a couple weeks ago...gravel biking in the Sequoia National Forest. One of my rides was in 100*F weather, with 9% humidity. At 5000-7000 feet above seal level. It was so much easier than a similar ride in ATX would have been. I had a 7 mile climb @ 4.4% and a 1.8 mile climb @ 6.5 % during that ride, and although I stopped to take breaks a few times and didn't exactly fly up those climbs, I didn't feel like I was going to die. It was kinda weird. -cls

  20. OK so not a fruit at all, and since we have oaks, this seems to fit. http://isatexas.com/tree_pests/eastern-speckled-oak-gall/
