  1. Everyone else at the office cut out early. At least I don’t have to share this tasty treat.

  2. Blah blah blah. I left the print publishing industry because I was making a little over $15 an hour after several years in the industry. It could work but I'm not wasting my time with it. "Zines" are fun. The Central Library has a huge collection of amateur zines you can peruse for inspiration. I'll contribute content to a website that wants to share info about riding bikes though. No money, no problem.

  6. Thats a terrible example anyway. He thinks Bezos bought the WP because its a legitimate source of viable income? Lolz He bought it to control the narrative and take in big money to publish misinformation. Basically his version of the national enquirer/facebook for corporate interests. f@ck amazon

  8. Really? I'm making the straw man argument here? You posted a stat that directly contradicts the financial potential of a printed magazine. I called you on it, then you reply with "there's paper materials at SXSW" and anecdotes about yachts and copy/paste stories about Amazon. Starting a grassroots, regional, special interest magazine has absolutely zero parallels with Bezos buying a major newspaper. So, who is really the straw man here? "A straw man is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent." Honestly, I hope you publish this magazine, and I hope it's great. I am your target market, so yeah, more good content would be good thing for me. However, if you are pitching this idea to the Shark Tank investors, you may want to leave out the statistics proving that the magazine industry is in a tailspin.

  14. I have had James Balentine build me wheels over the year and they are always the strongest and never go out of true. Not sure exactly how to get a hold of him these days, but he runs a velofix franchise here in Austin. https://www.velofix.com/locations/austin/ I'd ping them and see how to get James to build you some wheels. As an added benefit, they come to you, which is really worth a lot.

  15. Seriously? Hit us up. Let's session! The Christ Church jumps were running awesome yesterday - so fast. Tonight, we hit the Peddler jumps, b/c we knew the rain was coming in. We built them both, so you can't be shamed for riding when "wet":) So glad we got to do that, b/c it looks like days before we get to ride again. (Hint: build).

  19. Mostly riding the cushy 27.5 long-travel Remedy these days. Been sessioning those jump lines behind Peddlers and behind Christ Church. It's amazing to me how much strength and energy is required to keep the necessary pace to clear a series of jumps. Fools on YouTube make it look so damn easy!

  20. FWIW, The Saloon was a viable business model with plenty of local and MTB patrons to keep the burgers and beer flowing, back when it was operating under experienced management working the plan. What led to the demise was a succession of untenable contracts based on blue sky schemes with lessees lacking adequate business acumen to maintain the existing momentum. The next one after Diane didn't even want the MTB part of the business as part of their plan to make it a dedicated music venue, which is why Boomer's Bicycles stepped in securing a separate contract just to keep the trails open for us. When their grandiose plans for an epic music destination did not bear fruit the axe finally fell and the burgers and beer stopped flowing. The following lessee had even less ambition, experience, or resources and did little more than collect the rider's money, live in a trailer beside the saloon, and talk big talk about all they were going to do, and never did. It wasn't so much that the Saloon failed, as it was that nobody after Diane left ever really embraced running the place with the whole recipe in play taking advantage of locals, riders, events, camping and all that goes with that as it had always worked. As for the future, the slab has/had(?) studs when it was poured. The kind in all the places that would support erecting a conventional metal building. Despite this, it was originally constructed from trees sourced on property. As far as I know it ought to be reasonably straight forward to do something with it once the cleanup is done. I'd suspect that at the very least the restrooms/showers and the pay station would be covered again. I very much miss that Saloon, and the diverse community that once thrived there. But, yeah, I would not expect the site ever becoming a commercial venue where folks could gather for refreshment and camaraderie after a ride, and as a destination for locals, motorcyclists, and all others who used to frequent the place unless there were someone with vision and amazing negotiating skills able to pull a rabbit out of a hat.
