  1. I can’t watch rampage because I hate seeing injuries, but also after learning how they’re not compensated enough for what they do I am even less inclined to watch it.

  2. TVS and the other injuries was just a reminder that this event needs to be rethought. Southern Utah is our old stomping ground so we watched what we could, but between the commentary and crashes, couldn't finish it. Riders are beyond skilled bordering on superhuman. They need to be compensated as such.

  3. Van Steenburgen's wreck was absolutely brutal. Brandon Semenuk is a robot. I had no idea about his rally car racing prowess.

  5. Damn! Just now reading about the injuries TVS sustained. I saw the crash live and knew they carted him off to the hospital, but had no idea it would be as bad as it was. Wondering even if those will be career ending, which would be really unfortunate for such a great competitor. The reality I suppose is that it could have been even worse, and frankly I'm surprised that nobody has died doing this stuff. Semenuk's interest in rally racing might be due to better sponsorship / pay opportunities than what these guys can make strictly on MTB. As you stated, if you're going to risk your life making a living, it should at least be lucrative.

  6. Weather and dirt were great. Trails and signage, notsomuch. 5 years since my last ride out there, and it's still pretty meh. Rocky Mountain was doing a demo and we also got to dodge hippies on the utopia fest side of the ranch 🤣

  8. Agreed... But... I have a suspicious feeling that this sounds a lot like the guy who said that carburetors were always going to be around and a computer on a car is idiotic. As an ME I have a low opinion on the thoroughness of software engineering on modem devices. It's way too easy to phone in the design and move in to production with a half baked ideas. I have loss count how many modern devices I've wanted to throw out the window for being absolute junk. #getoffmylawn

  9. There’s a lot of unlimited cash in the cycling world and more in the RV crowd. You still rolling a 26r…?

  11. Nothing's better than bashing something you've never tried. You guys are missing one thing - they're fun as shit. AB, let me add one more category: 2E. Vacationers who have 3 days to ride 200+ miles of trail, but legs that can only handle a fraction of that. Or same vein, "I have a rare day with no kids or chores, and I want to ride longer than I normally would and not suffer terribly doing it." I don't own one. I have ridden one on difficult, technical trails. It wouldn't be my only bike, but if I had the means, an eMTB would be the 2nd or 3rd bike in my stable. Why? They are fun as shit.

  12. As I understand it, they rode bicycles in the woods at ideal temperatures. So I imagine it was great.

  13. So, i'm traveling to Maui end of July with the family. Would like to get in one day of riding. Still trying to fill in the logistics/details. Things i know: Haleakala and Kahakapao (Pineapple Express) are the places to ride. Krank Cyles is the place to rent bikes. Trying to figure out: Are there any shuttle options for Haleakala? should i just rent a road bike and climb/descend Haleakala from Krank? or should i try to do the same on a MTB and ride the trail down? or try to get my wife to shuttle me to the top of Haleakala, ride the trail down and then ride back to Krank and possibly hit Kahakapao? this last option is my preference, but i'm not sure if the logistics will work out since we will be in a sedan. any advice/recommendations are appreciated.

  14. Post trip update: didn't get to ride down Haleakala. I had the bike, and we drove to the top, but my wife wasn't feeling well. Didn't want to push my luck. I will say the drive up the volcano was scarier than the ride back down. maybe is has something to do with acclimating (mentally) to the ridiculous views. She was nervous about the shuttle, and wasn't that comfortable with the rental car. Three noisy kids didn't help either. Krank cycles was great about the rental and info. they said there are no shuttles to the top. There are plenty of tour companies dropping off people to ride the road down right below the park entrance. its still another 3000 ft of elevation gain to get to the top from there. I never contacted this shuttle company, but i believe its $80 to 6500ft: https://mauisunriders.com/ So i just ended up riding the forest, Pineapple express was a fun flow trail. Renegade to Ravine was super fun too. I would recommend climbing the East Loop Trail, the other trails are all best downhill IMO. https://www.strava.com/activities/5729442145 my original plan was to ride Haleakala, then ride road over to the forest. Sounds like that would be around a 6 hour ride, and the climb up to the forest is a pretty brutal 1500ft.
