mack_turtle
General advice: CL ads dissapear suddenly. Take a screenshot of the ad and post it for the sake of posterity lulz.

MrTheCatLady
OK this is totally a scam. I have been corresponding with the...ahem...owner, and they sent me this "ebay link". (It's totally not ebay.) http://sporting-g.cycling.bicycles.listing-908172.com/1/2/1388/dibf69ct-zarts-dibf69ct/2017-trek-fuel-ex-8-27-5-plus-large-w-sram-gx-1x11-and-dropper -cls
Albert
Well, that's kind of crazy. That's a pretty good copy of eBay.
MrTheCatLady
I just told the guy I don't have an ebay or paypal account and could i send him straight up cash. -cls

Albert
I'm sure that would fool quite a few people who don't take a look at the URL. The site appears to be hosted by Namecheap.com here in the US, and they would probably shut it down if brought to their attention. ..Al

MrTheCatLady
I'm torn between trying to have fun with this and trying to get some effective legal action going. There is clearly a right choice, but I just don't know how effective legal action will actually be. If they get nervous, this site/scammer could fold up Internet shop and reopen in a matter of minutes and would have then more-or-less disappeared. Any advice? -cls

gotdurt
Here's the real auction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-Trek-Fuel-EX-8-27-5-Plus-Large-w-SRAM-GX-1x11-and-Dropper/253810265654?hash=item3b18454e36:g:RMsAAOSwE0Jbbzr1 What these guys do is they go and look for closed auctions, steal all the info and photos, and of course put a too-good-to-be-true price on it... but with the info and description from the expired auction/listing, it sounds more legit. You usually see it with cars, especially niche stuff. Edited August 23, 2018 by gotdurt
Albert
Good job on finding the original auction. I did a reverse image search (using Google and TinEye) and didn't come up with anything. Guess they don't index eBay auctions, which is too bad.

MrTheCatLady
Not sure how to answer that. Legal action that would result in punishment of the "seller" for engaging in fraudulent activity/general douche-baggish-ness? -cls Edited August 23, 2018 by MrTheCatLady
Albert
Are you in a position to actually make any legal claims? I think the best that could be done is to get his site(s) taken down by reporting them to his host, but as you said, another will go up somewhere else. I don't mind inconveniencing scumbags like this, though
