  2. As a rule any time someone looks at a trend and says "X is here to stay" you should take the under on that bet. CDs were here to stay. DVDs were here to stay. Napster was here to stay. 9-speed is here to stay. The world moves on. Except for single speeds. Singlespeeds are here to stay.

  4. What's the best bike to ride on the trails after it rains? Are Porcupine tires good for riding the Nut? Should I wear underwear under my gym shorts for riding?

  5. Just did a $150 curbside there yesterday. Picked it up at Mueller with the bike on the back, got in a 20 mile urban ride out to 290 on SWCT and back. Good day overall. And everything is restocked.

  6. Thanks to @horncpa for the help yesterday moving the cedar logs over to the drop on Picnic. That was an adventure! @First Bloodi was hoping to use my kayak hauling rig that I use on my gravel bike. Decided that physics would have kicked my butt. Braking would have been sketchy given the weight. Ended up using the trolley and walking the pieces.

  7. No specific comment just yet. what does this mean for Austin trails, access, crowding, business, etc? Mostly good things IMO but it will come with challenges.

  10. I went with the maxxis Recons 24 x 2.2. I think it’s likely the $33 dollar ones on e-bay you are referring to. They are not labeled Tubeless ready, but are 60 TPI and sealed up tubeless with no problems! I also picks up some cheap anodized purple schrader tubeless valves on e-bay or Amazon and they also worked without a hitch.

  11. My son kept loosing traction on his 24” bike, so we put 2.4 DHF’s front & back. They are heavy but are great for the loose over hard stuff. I saw his riding improve as he grew more confident of the tire hooking up. Backdrop, he was riding 2.8 Vee’s with shallow tread before the DHF’s. Cheers, Shaner

  12. Radium Girls on Netflix. based on the the true story about the fight for safe work conditions when working with radioactive materials in the 1920s. it's jarring to learn that, at that time, radioactive substances were sold as a cure for everything, including cancer. it's not surprising to learn how hard leaders in the industry worked to suppress the truth about it that is obvious to us today.

  14. My son now owns more bikes than I do. Which is saying a lot. It started with a junker from Goodwill. He rode the snot out of it, so I got him a 20" Hotrock, which has been great, but the time came for something without a coaster brake. We got him an 18" haro bmx setup, which he enjoys at 9th street, but I don't see getting a lot of miles (fine at $100). He really enjoys mountain bike trails, so I snagged a Kona 24" bike which has been good, but when I started to map out upgrades to it, it just made sense to start fresh. So, early this week I won a GT Stomp 24" disc frame on ebay. Got wheelset parts coming (Dyad 25mm rims and Stans'Novatec hubs). Got a Fox 26" air fork to knock down. Got a 1x9 xt setup, just need cranks and brakes. Leaning towards BB7's, but if I can snag hydros I guess I will. Going to be a few weeks for parts to arrive, but hoping for a 25# bike when all is said and done. Wondering if there is any interest in a pay it forward kids thread for parts. Lots of the junk we have in our garage parts boxes is actually idea for kids (generic stems, 27.2 posts, 9spd bits)..

  15. Using Strava's Heatmaps (and trying to maintain zoom level for apples/apples), BLORA isn't getting near the traffic of Dana Peak, but it gets a lot more than Thumper, for example. So folks are riding there a bit. Probably just the locals. At only 18 miles from Dana Peak, so it may be worth checking out with a quick trip if, for example, some folks tried to fill 2-3 days of riding with Dana Peak. BLORA: Miller Springs looks more popular, but smaller: Thumper is ice-cold: One hot snipet of Dana Peak for comparison: Heatmaps are fascinating. I also found a bunch of squiggly lines just south-west of DP...Google maps shows it to be CTOR (CenTex Off Road), a private motorcycle park that doesn't allow bikes (according to their FAQ). So either bikes are riding there, or folks are recording motorcycle rides as bike rides--which isn't that uncommon.

  17. Yes, there is a Homeless Fortress on the south side of Old San Antonio Rd, across the road from South Park Meadows. But it's easy to avoid by just staying on the road as you head east to get on the I35 frontage road to cross the bridge over Slaughter Creek. That bridge has a VERY wide shoulder so it's a safe passage. That's the only homeless camp that I've seen anywhere out there now.
