  1. Been spending the week with SATN and hit some of the stuff off 1826 today. Meridian bowl area was cool. Also looks like discarded sex toys are not excusive to north austin. This little lonesome fella was in the CVS parking lot at 45/1826

  2. The fence at Brushy that was torn down last week was permanently fixed today. GreenMTBrider and I moved the fence further back between two trees so it’s a pinch point, there’s no way around it unless you start chopping branches. The posts are cemented into the ground. I re-vegetated the trail by planting grasses and cactus, then placing rocks. You can’t tell it was once a trail. I also blocked the trail beyond the fence with brush, rocks, and cactus.

  4. Not sure about details....but I got to know Claire and Cody through my MX friends. So at one of the parties, I got to meet the "new" guy... Hill. He was as cool then as now. Got my first Cooks from them in "84. Seen Claire not too long ago and a "old MXers party".... had a big crush on her for sure. Cody had a "salmon" colored Cooks.. man he could do a coaster wheelie in circles ! Due could ride. we lost him a few years back. I do remember riding with Hill on a white Stumpy...and me on a white Cooks... when the was only the main trail on the green belt. I hold Hill in high regards.

  5. easy start is to park next to ATX Bikes and find the singletrack leading toward the woods behind the store. you'll cross a gravel path. when you find Slaughter Creek (which is dry most of the time, including now), head east or west and just hug the creek. you'll pass under Escarpment if you head west, then through Circle C Metro Park. There's a fair amount of chunk west of Escarpment. eventually, you'll hit the eastern boundary of Slaughter Creek preserve and need to turn back on another trail on the other side of the park. going east will take you under MOPAC toward the Veloway. There are a bunch of trail options over there. if you follow the creek and surrounding trails long enough, you'll end up in a residential neighborhood where Bowie high school is. that's a good place to turn back and find more trails. easily a 10-15 mile route can be found in there. of course that's just The Tip (haha) but it's a good start.

  6. There was a pretty big homeless camp underneath Mopac on the north bank of Williamson Creek. Now it's cleaned up. I wondered who did that? City? Highways? Greg Abbott? It was encouraging to say the least.

  7. I'm with Cody. For me it's not about what's correct but what's practical and understood. After reading @mack_turtle's reply, I got a ride in, and I practiced left hand braking and right hand pointing. Easy and natural on the flats, but as soon as I hit a technical right-hander, I revert to rear brake (I'm right hand dominant so that may be part of it?). I know in a wet street I'll revert to right hand braking too. So what about the other signals @mack_turtle? Do you know the stopping signal? Is it more intuitive? Would it matter if done with a right hand?

  8. Nice, maybe I'll head down there this weekend. Did you take it home and wash it off?

  10. Back in my UT Days on my day off I would ride from 45th and Guadulupe, pick up the shoal creek trail to town lake, cross over ride the hiking trail use the Railroad Tunnel to get to Barton Springs then to the GB entrance. Ride out to HOL. On good days jump in a swimming hole to cool off and turn around. Would swing by the Barton Springs BSS on way back fill up with water, then hit Delaware Subs on 38th and get home eat and recover.

  11. When I hear someone in front of me yell “...Oh $hit!” it generally means there’s an unexpected drop that he/she just hit. The feces in this case might be rider based and not dog based. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  12. there's a fun universal signal for canine feces on the trail. you just yell "poop!" at the top your lungs and every knows to swerve around the landmine.

  13. we had a short shower near Dick Nichols this morning. unless we get more rain, I expect that it will be slick but not sticky-muddy this afternoon.

  14. It rained, but not for more than 10 mins. Sun is coming out now so I imagine we are good to go.

  15. Yes, there's a bunch of trash around there. Surprisingly no beer cans, just soda cans, which is disappointing to me on a mischievous level.

  16. Here's some pics neighbors took. Looks like many items are from bulk pickup that we just had in the 'hood. The consensus on the neighborhood page is leaning to a teen hangout. That was my original guess as I agree it's too far away from anything commercial for a homeless encampment. Teens have probably been hanging out there then saw the opportunity to add some furniture during bulk pickup. A neighbor is contacting the HOA to see if they'll get it removed (it is Circle C HOA land). If not, neighbors are already planning on removing it themselves. Guess the kids should have built a more natural hangout spot.

  17. The more people you ask, the more pushback you'll get. I say just do it. A quiet word with Street & Bridge may well assist in getting a location to drop it all off.

  18. I spend a lot of time on a road bike and I get what you are saying. But over the years, I've developed a feedback loop with drivers that makes me more comfortable when out there. I could care less if its 'official' or "correct"....I care more about it being 'safe' and 'works'. One of my staples is that I raise my hand in a waving manner as I'm approaching a cross street where a car is coming (usually from my right). I.e...I'm heading south on Jollyville and a car is coming from Braker (to my right), and wants to turn into my lane and go south with me. As they roll up to the intersection, I raise my hand and sorta wave in order to get their attention. If I get a nod or a wave back, then I know they see me and I comfortably speed on by. If they don't acknowledge me then I prepare for an avoidance or brake check. I've prolly got a bag full of these habits and practices. Later, CJB

  19. I was using tubes to make life easier. Then my son's rear tire had a slow leak so I set it up tubeless. Ill do the same if the front ever flats.

  20. Not silly at all. My daughter is tubeless and I can’t wait to get my two younger ones tubeless, because I’m tired of patching slow leaks every two or three rides from small and sometimes large thorns. The primary place I take them for a quick after work rides is full of pointy things.

  21. An FYI/ask for those that ride through Avana. There's been some dumping or homeless activity off the trail near Escarpment between Antigo and Estana (northernmost section near 45 of Avana trails). Just keep a heads up and let me know if you see anything. It's in the area that usually sits under standing water after rain (near drainage under Escarpment) so may just be a dumping spot. Neighbors will probably also be clearing what's in there at some point. Thanks for any assistance.

  22. They were in the building where Kava bar is. I remember they had both floors. I think the 1st floor was service and the 2nd was sales but it's been a long time so I could be wrong. Around the same time they has a store on 183 near Anderson Mill.

  23. what does a raised left hand mean? seriously, almost no one knows what that means and expecting motorists to recognize it and not clobber you with their car is foolish. it's a useful signal in a bygone era for riding a motor bike or a old timey car that does not have a signal. if you want to indicate a turn while riding a bicycle, point in the direction of your intended turn with the hand on that side of your bike. point with your left hand to indicate a left turn and use your right hand for a right turn. that makes sense because it's intuitive to drivers and cyclists.

  24. They are giving away $5k to a local cycling group, and choosing by vote of people who stop by one of their stores from Feb 6-21st. Even if your not a member of ARR I would encourage everyone on this forum to swing by and cast a vote for ARR as they do a ton to keep our local trails open! (Probably preaching to the choir here😁)

  25. My turn yesterday, found a phone in the middle of the trail and actually found the owner a short time later in the park parking lot and was able to return the phone to it's owner. Sent from my moto g(7) supra using Tapatalk

  26. Most social media is just social poisoning. The anonymity brings out the worst in people. We would never be aggressive the way that people are today when we were younger. If you were talking shit about someone when we were younger you could count on them showing up at your doorstep or work or even better catch you out with your friends and make an example of you. We can't do that anymore but I feel sometimes it needs to happen.
