  2. Right, and conditions. For me, I'm thinking the sweet spot for number of gears is probably lower, like in the 7-8 range. I know that with the 11-speed setup I have now, I'm often jumping 2 gears at a time on the climbs and descents. Since I rarely use the lowest cog (50 I think), I could get rid of that, plus one in the midrange, adjust the tooth counts, and that'd put me at 9 gears. Maybe we'll get to the point of purely custom cogsets, although I could see that being a rathole of configurability that maybe I'd rather not delve into.

  3. Oh and back on thread topic. The sweet spot for any gear ratio is the one that feels best to you for your style of riding. Biomechanics plays a bigger part in what gear ratio is right for you than a gear ratio calculator does. Also the difference between 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed is not so much the ratio itself but the closeness of ratios making shift jumps smaller therefore making the amount of effort to spin those gears easier. More gears creates more sweet spots for a broader range of riders.

  4. The first mod I did to my FS bike was ditching the front mech. Never a regret.

  5. I have a Garmin 520 and tried out the Trail Forks feature while I was in Colorado this summer. In short, it was awesome. I didn't realize that my old 520 could do that. Basically, I made a route in Trail Forks with my PC browser, put it into my "favorites" and it downloaded to the Garmin Trail Forks app. Once loaded, it showed me the route and other nearby trail features, tried to tell me when to turn and warned me when I was off course. I personally like having a dedicated computer and a heart rate strap but having a HRM built into a watch is nice too.

  6. I think we're all safe on this one. I don't know a single person running a Rotor drivetrain. They're the company that makes a hydraulic shift system. Oh great something else that needs to be bled.

  7. Many of those OneUp configurations retail for more than my vehicle is currently worth. My tendency would be to wait to get the one I want at a lower price by buying used or on sale. I got my T2 for $150, I would have barfed if I had to pay retail for it.

  8. Well that looks fantastic! Yet another company trying to make proprietary bullshit that will be impossible to service and also be absolutely non future proof. That shock looks like an absolute nightmare being built into the rear triangle like that. well done Trek! Taking cues from Cannondale are you? Oh BTW two manufacturers of bikes I'd never buy.

  9. For my needs the 1up was perfect. But I never carry more than one bike.

  10. My FS bike is 1x11 and my gravel bike is 1x10. I don't see any reason to reduce the number of gears. They work.

  11. I actually would like to discuss this as I find it, as usual, a lot of hype. However, stuck and work and unable to put down my full thoughts right now. In short, I don't get it? My 1x10 and 1x11 is perfectly reliable and more than enough ratio for where I ride. If all you did is ride up, and then ride down then it makes more sense, but I rarely do that anymore.

  12. This is the first I have seen of that. It shows (again) that none of us are as smart as all of us. I should have asked the question of the "hive".

  18. Fitbit Surge. It was cheap (used) and has its own dedicated GPS. It tracks my general physical activity and uploads the data to Strava when I ride or run. It's also just a watch that I wear every day. The app allows me to input what foods I am eating so Big Brother knows if I am healthy.

  19. $480 to hold a single bike? Dang. My first bike didn't cost that much and I had to put it on layaway back in the early 90s!

  20. i can only imagine how you "conducted market research" before the advent of the internet. god help those employees The preferred ratio is completely subjective. What drivetrain do you have currently and is it too much or too little. Once you answer that question for yourself, go to a calculation link such as the one i posted and determine what would work best based on your current condition. Click buy. Very simple.

  22. There is nice all size drops at brushy. I think that is a beginner loop and should stay friendly for beginners. Just not to be selfish because I personally like the drop

  23. Unfortunately on Twitter I have a limited character count to work with so had to cut it short.... Here’s the full post from Ronan... !TRAIL CLOSURE! The drop, next to the creek, a few turns before the end of the trail is temporarily closed. You'll have to use the bypass for a few days. I've been receiving an increasing number of reports of people going off the edge of the trail after the drop and either falling or nearly falling into the creek, with one rider "Deb" taken out on a stretcher. To improve safety, the trail is going to be realigned after the drop to improve the runout distance before the trail turns left back up the hill. This should stop people going off the trail. I'll also be adding a signpost clearly marking the feature and the bypass around it. ....and from this day forward this feature will be known as "Deb's Drop" (she said it's ok).
