  1. Solution, let's start a go fund me, buy the guy out, and turn the house into a mid-ride party shack. I really don't see how this could go wrong.

  3. To be honest, it annoys me more that one land owner (who doesn't own the land the trail is on) gets to dictate trail closures than all the people who use the public land. There was zero reason to close that trail beyond 'Hey, I can see the rabble from my house! Begone!' unless I'm missing something. The trail isn't even used that much. They knew they bought against parkland, and should be expecting it to be used, not be their own private back yard.

  4. Finally got all of initial follow-up completed on my DVT/PE from a month ago. Both the clots in my lung and leg have been completely absorbed with no residual effects. They're also considering the clotting to have been provoked, which means that it was caused by some set of circumstances vs. an underlying disease condition. Hard to say exactly what caused it, but I'm guessing a combination of my body staying in a clotting sort of mood after massive hemorrhaging from my leg injury, subsequent surgery and related immobility, and 2 plane trips that had me sitting still for way longer than I should have been. All that's left to do is finish the 6 month regimen of anti-coagulants. Hate getting sucked into the whole high-cost, designer drug BS that is such a big part of our healthcare mess, but hey, suppose somebody has to pay for all of those Eliquis commercials. I've also learned that there are some misperceptions about the dangers of blood thinners. Yes they make it much more difficult to stop the bleeding, but if I happened to get a laceration while taking them, I'd survive. The greatest danger would be something like head trauma that caused an internal brain bleed. I'm not going to wait until Aug to start riding again; so figure I'll get back out on some of the easy stuff where the likelihood of internal trauma is low. However, if you spot a guy with a medical alert bracelet lying by the side of the trail looking all blue and shit, please just call my wife, whose number is displayed on my lock screen.

  5. This happens so much. Many race tracks have been closed because people moved next door then complained of the noise. My friend lives downtown right off 6th and he says neighbors are complaining about the noise from the clubs.

  6. Lately there seems to be a reemerging trend in MTB suspension design. The high pivot rear suspension. Commencal has of lately been crushing the competition with their high pivot downhill rig. The high pivot idea is not new but it appears that the engineers have finally gotten the geo and suspension kinematics dialed to work well in real world situations. I like the idea of the design allowing the rear wheel to start its travel with less resistance effectively getting the rear wheel to just travel over obstacles without trying to get hung up on roots, ledges and rocks. Kind of like a trailing link fork design. There are now a handful of companies dedicated to this platform, is this the new direction mountain bikes are going or just another marketing fad? Any thoughts? I'm game to give one of these a try.

  10. The brain bleeding and injury my wife suffered a couple months ago were scary because of the blood thinners she was taking. She's not allowed to be on them anymore. Thankfully, the heart surgery she has coming up in three weeks should resolve the issue that caused he to be taking them. Brain injuries are no joke, they can be devastating..and blood thinners can make them a LOT worse.

  11. One of my neighbors was on blood thinners after a heart attack. About three or four years ago I came home from work on New Years eve and there was a bunch of cop cars and an ambulance at my neighbors house, I assumed he had another heart attack. I find out later that he was on a ladder with a pole saw trimming tree branches. The ladder slipped and twisted he fell about fifteen feet landing on a flagstone patio hitting his head that caused bleeding around his brain, due to the blood thinners they couldn't get the bleeding under control and he died. He was the same age as me very eye opening experience. Go easy out there and and remember most traumatic bicycle head injuries occur at less than fifteen miles an hour.

  12. Yeah, you have to live. Getting out and riding slowly/safely and walking things that you normally ride is better than sitting on the couch.

  13. You CAN change the oil weight, within reason, for tuning. I used 5wt instead of the recommended 3wt when I redid my PIKE damper (at 210, figured a little extra would help) I did not change the lower/air chamber oil weight, as it's already a bit heavier, mostly just to keep things slick.

  15. Well said HoneyBadger. It amazes me what some people think is OK. Riding closed trails is very high on the list to things that make us all look bad.

  16. Actually like this one quite a bit. I use a couple of the ceramic/pottery 28oz bombers for growlers/bottle conditioning homebrew.

  17. Interesting question here. Is it better to have trails and mountain bike associated with "bike lanes" and general cycling OR to have it associated with green space and parks? It's hard to be against parks and green space. Removing lanes from use by cars (99% of the voters) is probably a less popular platform to run on.

  18. I'd like to ride one, but I'm not sure I'd be able to appreciate the differences. I don't think I would be able to push it hard enough.

  19. Same thing here I take those flights 4-5 times a year. No compression socks but walk/stretch, hydrate (no alcohol) and baby aspirin. and always an aisle seat so I can get up whenever I want.

  20. Yeah, when I used to do 12-14 hour flights to Asia I spent a lot of time up and walking around the cabin. Never wore the compression socks but drink a lot of water. That also forces you to get up more often 😉

  21. Full disclosure - I work for woom Bikes. Or maybe you have figured that out from my Screen name. The woom Off is a great value, and very light. Out woom OFF 6 (26") wheels is right at 20 lbs. It currently has a carbon fork, but we will be offering the bike with a front shock beginning later this month. Come and check out the woom OFF at our Demo Ride with the Austin Ridge Riders at Walnut Creek this Saturday. https://www.facebook.com/events/845834059192525/ https://us.woombikes.com/

  22. I also switched the oil on my old Manitou R7. I never liked how it felt, then I serviced it with different oil and it was an amazing transformation.

  24. Not a bad beer but can't really recommend it over some of the other porters out there. I was attracted to the stylish can and only later discovered it is named after the location in the book repository where "the shot" came from. Sort of a morbid way to name a beer.

  25. I'm paranoid about long flights. Even though I'm pretty fit, I wear compression socks for longer flights, and do calf raises through the flight. I read something a while back about athletes being at a higher risk after flying to an event, doing a hard race, then sitting still for 4-5 hours in their cramped plane seat.

  27. This is a great point. @rugger, @First Blood, @HoneyBadger and all the other buttholes out there have poured a tremendous amount of energy and love into all the Brushy trails. Just a few years ago there was NOTHING there except a few deer trails and couple of rogue paths. Now, there is a world class trail system that has made the city of Cedar Park a destination. Even if all the builders stepped away from those trails right now, I would still contend that they should never pay for a beer in this town again. Wilco Parks and Rec will never understand exactly how lucky they were to have trails built FOR FREE that are enjoyable AND sustainable.

  28. My brother has got his two kids on the Woom bike progression. I'd say Woom Off5 is the perfect one. The great thing about them is how light they are compared to other kids' bikes. You can get a traditional kids 24" then use some old light parts to lighten it up (easy to take 5lbs off a 24" or 26" bike). But this one is ready to go: They are based in Austin and have a showroom and can pick up locally on Rundberg Ln. https://us.woombikes.com/products/off5
