  4. From someone who flipped a truck towing a trailer that was almost at the max towing capacity, be careful. IMO it is not about what your vehicle can tow going 40mph on a nice sunshine day out to pedernales. It is about what your vehicle can handle when you have a blowout, or you catch a 50mph crosswind crossing NW Texas, or you’re coming down a 10% grade for 6 miles and you’re burning up your brakes even though you’re hitting 4K rpms in 4th gear. I’ve been handling long haul trucks my whole life and had my CDL for 8 years (I’m only 32). When shit hits the fan in a passenger vehicle with something hanging off the back that you kind of shouldn’t be pulling, it’s a different ball game. May 25, 2017. My little wiener dog and I walked away without a scratch after kicking out the windshield.

  5. Why don't some of you retired folks run for office? Do one term. We need more regular people thinking of office as a service and not a career.

  6. Got a new sauce today, and had to share. Golden Habanero, and Yuzu citrus. This is NOT a turbo hot sauce, very nice for a lot of applications. I have probably 50 sauces right now, and some pods. What are your favorites?

  7. Getting a medium Rascal in Sedona Red. I like the red but it wasn't my first choice as it looks too much like a UT bike. I wanted the T1000 silver. Some decal graphics should help with that. UT is already getting enough of my money I don't need to passively support them. Don't really like any traditional sports so no hurt feelings. It seems almost impossible to get any worthwhile bike parts lately. Like ATXZJ posted anything that's available is probably something you don't really want.

  8. Appreciate the extra bike offer. I'll wait until my new one is built up. I'm expecting it to arrive early next week . I need to swap hubs on my wheels and then assemble it. I could possibly be ready for next Friday. The following Friday for sure.

  9. As in I should bring an extra bike for you tomorrow? Or just sounds good that we are starting the ride back up?

  10. Closer to home Flat Rock Ranch's newish green loop may work out for family friendly rides as well. Much of it is machine or hits the easier bits of the XC loop.

  12. Love this thread! I got a bunch. First one, if you like the BS rooster sriracha, stop what you are doing and go buy this. Fix Sriracha. It's not quite as spicy as the rooster sauce, but soooo much more depth of flavor.

  13. I still ride over there regularly. Some of the singletrack still exists and the golf course is still abandoned. Most of the roads have been repaved, but there are a few that are nicely rutted dirt roads. Those roads plus the the golf course cart path make a fun gravel ride or take the MTB over there and connect the singletrack that I've found with some golf course and road in between. I wish there were still 25 miles of singletrack. There is so much potential for MTB if we were given permission to build jumps and berms on the golf course. Imagine an easy pedal up a cart path, then turning down a sweeping open par 5, carving from one side of the fairway to the other, with bermed curves and jumps and technical features in between. Just sayin'...

  15. That Tacoma has the 3.5L V6 as well as the factory towing package. Believe it was rated for 6,600 or 6,800lbs. Trailer with equipment was pegged at 5,500lbs almost on the dot. I was 40 miles east of Ft Stockton going 60mph on I 10 at about 5am. Came over a standard low profile overpass that had a good bump at the end. Coming off the bump I blew out the drivers side front tire on the trailer, which I immediately felt and cut the cruise off. Watching my mirrors and my speed drop the trailer was crazy off balance and started to sway as I gently braked (didn’t think locking them up was a good idea that this point). Ended up getting sideways somewhere between 30 and 40mph. Both trailer and truck going driver side first. Trailer sheered both wheels off that side and the hitch pin sheered off from the truck at some point. Allowing the truck to roll over the roof and stopping in the passenger side. I believe the safety chains are what stopped the truck from rolling more. To this day I believe I acted to the best of my ability and would have the same actions if in that situation again now.

  18. I knew someone who was starting in med school and learning about human anatomy. she could not eat anything that had clearly defined muscles after a few weeks because it reminded her of the cadavers she was studying. perhaps there's something to that. if a cat wants to eat you, she's not going to slowly march toward you and look scary. she's gonna hide in a tree and eat your face when you're least expecting it.

  19. I can confirm that as of yesterday evening The Peddler still seems to have a ton of helmets in stock. I didn't go inside the store (they close at 5 now, apparently) but there were helmet boxes stacked 5 or 6 high along the windows at the front of the shop.

  23. It was good. We've stayed in better Air BnB's but it was in a great location (J St and Central Ave.). We were super close to the entrance for Crystal Bridges, just up the street from 8th St. Marketplace and the new 8th St. Pumptrack, and a short drive (or ride) to Downtown. My parents were with us and not super in to the idea of eating out with large crowds yet, so we did a lot of take out but that's probably what we would have done anyway. The family loved the Sat. morning farmers market, and the North Forest Lights was one of the coolest things I've seen. Saturday, I pretty much hit as much of Slaughter Pen as I could or wanted to. I made sure to hit the new stuff. -Masterpiece is an industrial work of art. The first half of it including the trail surface itself is fabricated from iron; industrial chain links, giant spokes and nipples for the railing supports, metal grating for the trail surface shaped in to pump track-like rollers ending in an iron table top. This leads in to a dirt roller followed by a larger table top and then a dirt lip-to iron mesh tabled hip-jump with optional giant iron cog wall ride. It's amazing. -Then FlowZone is the new progressive line down the power line easement that the upper part of Ozone used to be before heading south to the sewage treatment plant. The breeze was from the south that morning and the smell going up Ozone had me dry heaving any time I opened my mouth to take a breath. It was awful. Flowzone starts at the top by the Apartments with a rock slab drop to transition that they've decked the "gap" so that it's totally rollable which leads in to a nice sized table followed by a right handed berm. This sends you in to a fast paced rock garden and then a huge wooden platform roll-in. This sets you up to either a hip on the right side or a big roller on the left. Either way you gain ton of speed before step up to left turn back down another rock garden. The garden sends you in to a big sweeping righthand berm followed by another big roller and a bigger step up jump to the end. Take the old Ozone trail back to the top to session. I'm not a jumper but that trail is a blast. You get going SO fast. Sunday, I rode from the house to make my way to Little Sugar. The freeway end between B'ville and Bellavista is under construction. So the paved path is closed. I had to ride the shoulder of the highway to make it up there. I started in at the Dairy Queen and started climbing up Tunnel Vision. At the first fork in the trail I chose to head counter-clockwise. The ENTIRE TRAIL is a flow trail. It's all machine cut with rollers, berms, optional jumps, and some massive mandatory gap jumps sprinkled in. Essentially the trail climbs from the bottom to a neighborhood road and then bombs the other side back to the bottom, rinse, repeat. It doesn't matter which direction you go CW or CCW, you're either climbing up a flow trail hoping no one is bombing down or you're the one bombing down. Climbing back up the rollers help make the climbs not as bad, but the whole system as the locals claim has the most elevation change of any trail in the NWA area. My legs were shredded when I got back to the house (I didn't do the whole thing). I could see 40miles of it getting a little tiresome as it's kind of the same trail features over and over (at least the part I rode). Monday morning on our way home we hit the Runway Bike Park for the kids. They love it and I love the pump track there.

  24. Though I no longer live in Wimberley, I know Woodcreek well. In the mid to late 80s I lived in Wimberley and couple of us developed an extensive trail network in Woodcreek North. This was during the real estate bust cycle and most of Woodcreek North had gone feral. Only a few houses had been built, mostly clustered towards the front. The rest was available to ride. It included an abandoned 18 hole golf course, a mile or more of Dry Cypress Creek just above Jacob’s Well, and miles of asphalt roads that were rutted and turning into dirt roads. Over a few years we built approximately 25 miles of single track. Our trail-building style leaned towards a bunch of techy features connected by meandering trails. We still were riding what remained of it as recently as 15 years ago. Unfortunately the neighborhood finally built out and as far as I know there is almost no trace of our trail system.

  26. my tallboy was an LTC, even though the HTA is steep by today's standards it definitely had that monster truck feel. I was bombing down sketchy stuff in the BCGB and four corners that my friends with years more experience were a lot more cautious on. What I didnt like about the tallboy LTc was the VPP suspension, it was super cush on the downhill but too bouncy on the climbs. The VPP was more composed on the sketch than the ripmo where the suspension is a little too firm. My next bike was the turner czar which I love. It definitely isnt as plush on the down hills, but is amazing for climbs. I feel like I maneuver, get over ledges, etc really nicely, but I found myself being scared on stuff that I had easily ridden on the tallboy, so I got the ripmo. It definitely gives me confidence for sketchy downhill and climbs nicely, but overall I just dont feel like it fits like a glove like the czar. On climbs on the czar (and the tallboy) I had to sit on the nose of the seat (e.g. jester/yaupon/courtyard). On the ripmo I can sit further back, but on the flats I have to be careful not to put too much pressure on my hands. I have the ripmo adjusted reasonably well now but I had to push my seat all the way back, which I think defeats the purpose of the steep STA. I think I prefer the czar geometry over the ripmo and if the czar had more travel - eg. 130 or 140mm that would be my ideal bike. Everyone kept waiting for an updated turner sultan, but it never arrived.

  27. That's exactly what my dad is doing. Freshly retired, wants to make a difference in the community, and what better way to spend newly found free time than bickering with other retirees. You'd have my vote.

  29. My oldest son hates it! He will eat it b/c I tell him that's what's for dinner...but he never could come to terms with the fact that the name of the meat is the same as the name of the living thing. My youngest then tried to claim he couldn't eat vegetables because they were once alive....
