I just wanted to stop by and give a shoutout and big thank you to my good friend Krys Brown, owner of Cracked Carbon Repair in Austin, Texas for fixing the multiple carbon failures on my evil wreckoning before the the angel fire 5 race, and the Pajarito DH Race happened last weekend. If any of you other guys have been left high and dry with a broken frame like I was, or happened to smash it into something on accident, save yourselves lots of headache and cash and contact Krys Brown directly, or through me, and we can get your broken carbon fixed for great pricing and awesome quality work. My wreckoning had 3 cracks, (one in top tube and 2 in rear triangle) and 2 chips. All fixed and holding up great after a rowdy DH race in Angelfire two weekends ago, immediately followed by the party in pajarito DH race this last weekend! This is the real evil undead. Brought back from the grave. I got a kick winning my class and showing off my Carbon patched up P.O.S wreckoning. 🤣 thanks evil 🤘💩🤘🤘💩🤘

  2. Well the trails suck but that doesn't mean that I can't be on a bike. I went out to do the veggie buffet - all of the streets, none of the trails (except for the 1/4 mile that I stole at WC.) To be fair, I did not do the little section to/from St. Ed's because that sucks. I had started out with a goal of just doing the big hills, but after I got started it all just fell together. Was not planning to do the whole thing but it worked out that way. Some interesting data points for the the nerds in the crowd: 1. Burned ~1800 calories just doing the road portions, I would imagine the trail portions double that, so fill your tanks appropriately 2. Courtyard was about 80 calories of effort. 3. I was burning ~6 calories a minute. On the trails I typically hit 8/minute. 4. For you keto people in the crowd, I had 3 eggs with cheese, ~12 pepperoni-sized pieces of salami and a handful of wholegrain (homemade) crackers with peanut butter for breakfast. That held me. I ate nothing and only drank water. Got home and was hungry, but not famished, could have gone a few more hours without eating. 5. The weather was perfect. Overcast, occasional light drizzle. Huge difference from my earlier rides in the upper 90's/lower 100's. Overall I feel like being able to just jump in and do this today means I am in good enough shape for the real thing. I'll be out of the country for almost 3 weeks before so I will need to step up the training. A trip to Bentonville should help get me back in shape. I might do another of these next Monday if anyone wants to join me.

  4. My October Bentonville plan has been slightly derailed, but I'm looking at heading towards Lake Ouachita, for a few days of MTB'ing Womble trail, and then camping/Kayak fishing early Nov. Not sure about how the weather is during that time, but it looks like under and 8 hour drive? Other trails in the general area to ride as well if the fishing is shit. I sure want to see Arkansas in the fall.

  5. Came here to post Palo Duro and Marcus beat me to it. Both are great visual wise and Palo Duro is better for infrastructure needs like gas, food, stores, and bike shops.

  6. I use a pencil case for ogranizing bag tools. Lots of pockets and loops for holding everything tire, chain, etc repair.

  7. I got a pretty good deal at the best western in canyon. food is meh but we didnt look too hard. amarillo is super close though if you want good food

  9. With 4 days total, you could pull off Bentonville. If you packed it tight you could ride every day. But I think I'd try to ride 2.5. Day 1- Drive to Bentonville, settle in, eat well and get good nights rest Day2- Ride Slaughter Pen 1-3, Coler Park, and some other systems all with in riding distance Day3- Ride Back 40 and as much of the "inside 40" stuff that you can mange (I've done 7+ hrs of riding all in that same system) Day4- Get up early drive a little south towards Fayetteville and ride Mt Kessler. Jump in the car and head home. (I've got all of these routes/days laid out in my Strava record from last Sept 17') Later, -CJB

  11. Wife and I have done day drives to big bend, Bentonville and Palo duro. For a 3 day, I'd do Palo duro. Not worth the drive to Bentonville for just one day. Big bend is cool if you're looking to get off the grid but I'd plan a couple days there too. Riding wise, Palo is just as, if not more serene than BB and the trails are WAY more fun. If you could push to 4 day, you can enjoy the flow trails and the newer more aggressive stuff like rock garden and comanche. https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/302693/rock-garden-trail https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/7004369/comanche-trail-mid Plenty of camping and lodging in area.   12. There are lots of routes from Zilker to 360 near Scottish Woods. I go under MOPAC due west of Zilker on Rollingwood. At Bee Caves the same road becomes Old Walsh Tarlton Follow that road until it "T"s at Wilderness. Turn right on Wildernest. Turn left at Walsh Tarlton and next right (less than a normal block) on Pinnacle. At the Westlake schools (jr high and high school) turn left on Westbank. At the top of that Westbank climb is 360 directly across from Scottish Woods. This sounds complicated but I recall this is actually a marked bike route so it is easy to follow. But in terms of easy to follow, Austin Bike's route is hard to beat.

New Mexico for sure. but dont know where exactly yet. lots of ideas. im trying to jump through the hoops here at apple to become and at-home-advisor which will allow me to work anywhere from home with phone line and internet connection. id only be required to stay stationary per location for 1 year at a time. one Idea im really liking would be to buy a cheap condo in angelfire, live in it and renovate it all winter, then start to AirBnB/homeaway it out and make it pay for itself and move somewhere else if I wanted. descent houses in New Mexico range from 80k-200k. I could easily live by myself up there and be comfortable. im born and raised in Austin, but the way things have changed, I cant really afford to comfortably live here independently without changing my lifestyle. its so overpriced, and congested with people, im ready to leave home nest. my mortgage for a condo or descent house in New Mexico is equivalent to HALF of my rent to live in a shitty little tiny duplex in round rock. I would miss my family and local riding community, but I feel like if I never move and stay in this little Austin bubble my entire life I will regret it when I get older

  18. Yep. Amazing the number of innovative design changes to all hydration packs after a real backpack company got into the market. Magnet clips for hoses, pockets in the waist straps, wide flat shoulder straps, chest strap. All on their first try. Now “borrowed” by the big guys. Good thing about the tool roll is you can easily take it out for trail use AND it’s easy to keep all the small tools together when I unload bike stuff for hiking or washing the pack.   19. Strava is probably estimating your caloric expenditure based on an estimate of your wattage from the known elevation profile, your weight, pace, etc. Calories ~= power * time (joules * time). Heart rate, imo, is not a good way to estimate your caloric output due to pedalling. Same exact efforts on two different days, one at 70F and the other at 100F will result in vastly different heart rates. Also, if you ride at the same exact sustainable power output, your heart rate will drift upward over time. all of which is to say, I'd go with the Strava number over the fitbit number. At least for the ride duration.

  21. For me, if I'm leading a Veggie Buffet ride, I usually just go across the river under the Mopac bridge and then take the access road all the way down to Barton Springs Mall. Then make a right onto 360. ....if I was riding solo, then I'd cross over town lake and the same spot, but once onto the access road, I'd take a right into Rolling Wood and zig zag through the hills over to West Lake High where I'd hop out onto 360. This has a bit less traffic complexity and you also get more hills. -CJB

  22. I like my Salomon’s too. On my 3rd or 4th pair. My Shimano ME7’s have quick laces and a similar adjustment piece as Salomon’s and a tongue that completely covers laces and adjuster. No buckle to break like BOA’s. I constantly scrape my shoes on rocks. Broke several SIDI buckles. :( Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

What's the tongue weight limit for you vehicle Seth? 4 Enduro bikes @ about 30lbs each + 60+lb rack = 180lbs+ My Outback's limited at 200lbs and that's calculated for a trailer, not an unsupported load cantilevering off the hitch. There's no way my car should ever have 4 bikes loaded on the hitch. A 4 tray rack is a really long lever and even small bounces can magnify the load on the end of it. So, while it's parked it might just be below the weight limit, but hitting a dip in the road even at 15mph could send the effective load at the hitch way over. Curt even states in their installation instructions to not mount unsupported loads to the hitch without using bracing straps attached to the top of the vehicle or it voids their warranty.

  30. The ground is waterlogged, riding will cause deep ruts, which a few people have so graciously demonstrated. Another shower just rolled through. On the bright side, the ground is perfect for building. When it drys up there will be a few new surprises for everyone.

  31. So as you could imagine Brushy is still way too wet to ride and as predicted there have been a select few assholes that have still been riding. While building on Peddlers Pass last night I saw only one set of tire marks that had caused ruts. I went to finish off the work at lunchtime and there were four more sets of tire tracks. They caused nice deep ruts. Whoever you are, your an asshole. Instead of spending my time making the trail more fun, I had to fix all the ruts you caused. In the future please try to be an adult and have some self-control.
