I'd actually say your comparison is not applicable to e-bikes. More accurate: 1936 Olympic Archery = 1980's Mt. Bike 2016 Olympic Archery = 2016 Mt. Bike Chewbaca's Bow Caster = eBike All of them will get the job done, but they are admittedly different.4 points

If you are otherwise capable of riding a regular bike and you use an e-bike to brap through trails, passing riders who are fitter than you, you're an asshole. You might be an otherwise nice person but for that moment, you're an asshole.4 points

No. He's on mojo. Just visit him there. His brand of whatever is everywhere these days and it's tedious rather than amusing. I block it on twitter and fb; it's refreshing that he's not here.4 points

I don't care if their bike has batteries and a motor or not, it's the rider that will make it a problem if they so choose. You will find assholes on single speed fixies, DH bikes, DJ bikes, and e-bikes. However, you will also find cool people just trying to get out and enjoy being outside. I'd rather share the trails with an e-mtbiker that didn't buzz little kids or yell at ladies with dogs than a strava driven turd that wanted to pedal his way to internet pseudo fame. As for the pump track, it's definitely not an ideal place for e-bikes but as long as he's respectful to the trail and fellow riders, I don't see why not. Show him how to pick up a shovel and watering can because the 'no dig, no ride' policy applies to all.4 points

My interests are very similar to yours but I wouldn't go so far as to call somebody who only enjoys downhill a wuss. Extended downhill runs are extremely strenuous when you're in an attack position (half squat) and working to control your bike the whole way down. Still, like you I do enjoy earning those descents.3 points

That's my limited experience as well when going to really long downhills. Except, in my opinion (just came in from a 4.5mi trail run), running downhill is a lot harder on your legs. So for runners, I'd say, uphill runs would be the fun part, then slides on the way down....weeeeeeeeeeee!!2 points

Yes, you are working on sanctioned trails with a trail steward. This will also work for TMBRA PayDirt.2 points

I thought the tempeh farts were my reason for riding alone most days, but I am starting to suspect that my penchant for hills and sessioning the same up-ledge for 30 minutes might be a factor.2 points

If i were able to blow big cash on an e-bike, I'd buy one of these, make it as stealth as possible and just play dumb.2 points

Personally I'm too proud to ever consider riding one, even at 61. I also can't see them being nearly as playful for the type of riding I like to do. Not sure how I might feel at 70 (God willing), but because of my competitive nature, more than likely I'll just give up riding at some point and try to get good at golf (with cart of course). When I hired a guide for a ride in CA, he was half my age and riding an eMTB. To me that was a great application though. He was just trying to make some money, intentionally stayed behind me most of the time, and was carrying a lot of extra stuff in case we needed it. No telling how many rides he did that day or on what sort of bike.2 points

We were riding peddlers pass sunday and got to the multiple burm/roller secions and were moving pretty fast. I hear somebody come up on my wheel saying they want to get by and i thought, where the hell did he come from(?) We let him by only to see a middle aged, not in shape guy on an ebike, complete with coilspring shock......lolz2 points

Tyr and Speedo swimsuits and the new Nike Marathon record* breaking shoes are things they have, will, or may ban. But that’s not even close to a motor.2 points

I have seen quite a few e bikes at Walnut, always thought that was a strange place for them, especially on the pump track. Figured they were just renting them and only knew of Walnut. But yeah these were able bodied people and were using them to haul ass, totally want to call them out, but I guess they were outside and off their phones?2 points

I understand e-mtbs for people who have unsurmountable physical limitations, and e-bikes for utilitarian purposes like commuting for work and grocery hauling. I don't understand able-bodied athletes using overly expensive, complex equipment. I like to run and workout at a gym, and I don't see people running in shoes equipped with electric servos to go faster or lifters doing deadlifts with hydraulic leg braces so they can lift more. It's kind of cool that these kind of toys exist, but I can't help feeling like Huxley's John Savage when I see one, wanting to flog certain riders while shouting "impudent strumpet!"2 points

I was at WCPT and there was a guy out there for a few minutes super pleased with himself on his Turbo Levo. The rest of us were all looking at each other like whuuuuu. Another weekend I was playing on the step up at WCPT and a different guy on a Turbo decided it was a good idea to roll into it too. He got his front tire just to the top of the step up and that's about when he stopped, turtled and went all the way back down. It was glorious. We were all 😑 nobody moved.2 points

A dropper is soooo much more than simply getting behind the seat for a big drop. It gets you weight low and allows you to maneuver your body anytime you are descending.2 points

OK, finally had enough free time to finish out my reviews (some as late as last year). Here's the latest: Lake leatherwood - http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/united-states/369-leatherwood Passion Play - http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/united-states/368-passionplay Suburban Ninja - http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/north-of-austin/366-ninja Brushy Creek (updated) - http://www.austinbike.com/index.php/north-of-austin/15-brushy Trying to get out to a new trail southwest of here next week, we'll see how that goes. Going to spend the rest of today trying to finish up my bleeding brakes article before heading out to ride.2 points

Admitted: I'd run up Enchanted Rock if that was required to slide back down. That would definitely take a toll on the aesthetics though. I am a hopeless romantic when it comes to aeseticism, but I think of what Chuck Palanuik had to say about bulldozing challenges and risks, even the ones we create for no reason other than to overcome them, like putting a motor on a recreational bicycle: "People had been working for so many years to make the world a safe, organized place. nobody realized how boring it would become. with the whole world property-lined and speed-limited and zoned and taxed and regulated, with everyone tested and registered and addressed and recorded. nobody had left much room for adventure, except maybe the kind you could buy. on a roller coaster. at a movie. still, it would always be that kind of faux excitement. you know the dinosaurs aren't going to eat the kids. the test audiences have outvoted any chance of even a major faux disaster. and because there's no possibility of real disaster, real risk, we're left with no chance for real salvation. real elation. real excitement. Joy. Discovery. Invention. the laws that keep us safe, these same laws condemn us to boredom. without access to true chaos, we'll never have true peace."1 point

That's cool. I'm not trying to tell you how to feel about your choice of recreation. I trail run. I lift weights. I enjoy a good climb on my MTB. I enjoy those things for the same reasons you pointed out. I'm just saying that there is an inherent reward for suffering through a climb on a mountain bike that doesn't exist in those other activities. If there was such a parallel, they'd be putting in ski lifts for downhill trail runners.1 point

Have a buddy like you. Went to moab and did captain ahab on his rigid SS. Why, ill never know but thats what makes him happy. Took him to the lift bike park in NM a month later and he broke his leg within 5 minutes of riding.1 point

Entirely subjective, 100% false for many people. Weight lifting is a poor example that I used, but I don't go trail running because I like the act of running. I do it for the same reasons I enjoy mountain biking- enjoying the outdoors in a way that challenges me and takes my mind off daily BS. Put me in the woods with just my running shoes (and some sort of pants, don't get excited!) and I'll run for two hours. Put me on a treadmill and I'll hop off after ten minutes or the current episode of The Office concludes, whichever comes first. Payoff for going downhill: also subjective. Climbing is fun too. Anerobic exertion is euphoric. If you disagree, my opinion is that you might be a wussy. I've never had any interest whatsoever in going to a bike park. Spider Mountain? Meh, sounds boring. Do they have an uphill route? I might be into that.1 point

The faction that is so anti e-bikes are transferring their motives for mountain biking onto to others. You don't know what motivates the able bodied buyers. Maybe they run 20 miles a week for exercise and the e-bike experience is just a pure joyful recreation thing. And as to your example of electric servos; does anyone here doubt that if there were such a thing they would sell faster than e-bikes? I don't. I can think of lots of examples of technology making a sport easier. "Well in my day we HIKED to the top of the ski mountain to come down. Now these perfectly healthy people are using these damn lifts to get to the top. What sport is there in that!" Not to mention hikers' disdain for mountain bikers. "Why do they need those contraptions to enjoy nature?" I'm okay with e-bikes as they are now. No throttles, limited power. The Jeep thing scares me a bit. And I'll tell you young whipper snappers something. The older you get, and you start feeling the diminishing of your physical abilities, the more prone you will be to support e-biking.1 point

while upgrades are nice, if she is really riding park, i would vote for saving my money for a better bike in this particular case.1 point

Wellllllll, that turned out to be a little chilly at the end. Great ride but that cold front that was supposed to be there "overnight" got there like a friend showing up to your house early for a party and you haven't even showered yet.1 point

The industry is not even close to trying to market just the dying and decrepit...like me. They are focused on everyone that want's to put in minimal work for the maximum amount of thrill...like me. Let's face it, there's and untapped market of couch dwelling, beer drinking, ice cream addicts with massive amounts of disposable cash that if romanced with the thought, that by just laying down cash for and eMTB they can go straight from the fridge, charge up their magical electron biased miracle machine and turn Walnut Creek into Whistler downhill bike park. Like me 🙂1 point

Yeah, GM is going to bring out an electric hummer. And then this: https://www.engadget.com/2020/02/02/jeep-e-bike-super-bowl-ad-teaser/ How many bad car brands are going to try to create a mountain bike, only to have them implode in a spectacular bonfire of excess? I once saw a BMW mountain bike in Taipei and tried to take a picture of it and actually got yelled at. Stop the madness.0 points

So I've had some really good rides over the past week and was thinking I'd be making a final post on my successful recovery. However I now find myself in a hospital bed with a pulmonary embolism. They found a clot in my leg as well and are concluding that was the origin of the one that made its way to my lung. Just can't catch an f'n break!0 points

Lol, we were doing a Sunday trail work day at Walnut, really muddy that day...and along comes a couple guys on e-bikes zipping right through us as we're fixing what they break.0 points

This is NOT going to help the e-bike cause. Having a car company bragging about how powerful their bike is only exacerbates the "we don't want motorcycle type vehicles on the trails" argument. Does this Jeep thing have a throttle?0 points
