crazyt
on the plus side mtb is a great sport to do in this age of coronavirus. 1) sun kills the virus 2) wind disperses the virus 3) sweat kills viruses 4) you are not in close contact with other riders 5) you have to "work" from home Im going to have to stop brazilian jiu jitsu and start mtb again. See you all on the trails. Edited March 13, 2020 by crazyt
mack_turtle
Martial arts sounds like a GREAT way to contract the virus. You can't chop it away.

June Bug
We're taking self quarantining seriously since we're both way into the high-risk demographic age wise. Corona virus likes to park and go to work in the the lower respiratory tract of old people.  Older people with COVID-19 in northern Italy (heart of the pandemic) were dying from acute bilateral interstitial pneumonia and it's not a good way to go. If you survive that, there's potential for permanent lung damage.  Cycling and walking means we're not house bound. Really hoping this new corona virus is like others in the corona virus family and tapers off in warm to hot weather. Nobody knows, though. It's summer in Australia and people are getting sick there. Pedal on, y'all and and stay safe, well and happy.  Edited March 14, 2020 by June Bug
AustinBike
Got in a great solo ride today. Can’t. Be around anyone for the next 96 hours as I prep for surgery (have a small window, don’t want to blow it). Good mental therapy to be out there.

Maybe not by april, but by may. That will buy some time to get a vaccine. Otherwise it is going to be a long winter. This virus is very similar to existing corona viruses. Labs were already looking to develop a general vaccine, and they are already getting ready for human trials of a vaccine specific for this strain. I'll take that bet. Basically China knocked it out by shutting down hot spots. A totalitarian government is (sadly) in a better position to stop this. Look at Italy, which is the opposite direction socially. My Italian friends were telling me they have a phrase that is something to the effect of "my life, your death" which they say means "I get that this might be bad for you but I have to live my life". Sounds pretty American if you asked me. Basically we're a Petri dish at this point and until we have a real testing regimen in place I refuse to believe it is going to taper off any time soon. I have friends literally on a plane right now flying to Albuquerque for vacation. Yes, we as a society don't get it.

I'm hoping that staying active might help resistance. Also, holeing up is easier said than done. We went to three different stores and couldn't find a single potato. Ended up going to our favorite local restaurant and had a great meal and also copped a few potatoes for tomorrow. Edited March 15, 2020 by throet

This virus is only three months old, it is very new as a strain that infects people and because of that we have no immunity whatsoever to it. A virus that has never infected a human before is extremely dangerous not only due to the actual symptoms it creates but also the potential for the bodies immune system to over produce anti bodies or Cytokines creating what doctors refer to as Cytokine storm. The largest demographic of fatalities in the 1918 Spanish flu was healthy 19-25 year olds. They had healthy immune systems that went into overdrive when they contracted the virus causing them to die from their bodies response rather than from the flu itself. All because their bodies had never encountered a disease like it before. Be smart limit social contact as much as possible. The wife and I went out to dinner last night to a popular Austin restaurant that is usually very busy on a Saturday night, last night not so much. I discussed with the wife that this would be our last outing like that for a little while and that we should be smart and try to help slowing this thing down by "social distancing". My wife is also a hot yoga junkie and I explained to her that she's going to need to put that on pause for a little while. She was not happy about that. There is more to this than just the physical aspect, of course no one wants to die or see a family member or friend die but there is also the financial burden that something like this can create. Even with health insurance which I have none thanks to Obamacare it can create unsurmountable bills. Oh wait I forgot "everyone likes their health care and wants to keep it". This is just an example of why we need single payer healthcare. I know that's socialist talk, but the politicians have single payer healthcare provided by us through our tax dollars. The ultra wealthy don't give a f@ck about us. Bloomberg spent $500 million on a campaign that went nowhere, that's enough money to give each American 1.6 million dollars each. My hope for a good outcome from this virus is that it might help level the playing field a little bit. Viruses don't negotiate or care about money or for that matter toilet paper.

Moc 5
I got a solid 20+ solo miles on the Southie Trails yesterday. Came across less than 10 other riders and just a few walkers. Everything was beautiful and green. After a fairly rough week (for me personally), it was good for my soul.

But please check my math - $500 million divided by 330 million people in the USA (google reported) gives each of us in the USA about $1.60 each. That is ONE dollar and sixty cents. You know what they say - "they can't put in the internet if it *IS* true..." or something like that.  Edited March 15, 2020 by cxagent

The rising entitlement of the healthcare consumer over the last 10 years is already making being a health care worker very challenging. Can you Imagine with a single payer, this is my right for you to serve me attitude and by the way I’m going to cut your salary in half. We would lose a ton of good nurses and doctors that have brilliant minds and would succeed in other sectors.
RidingAgain
My sister is a two time cancer survivor. Her first round took place when she was living in England, just outside of London, back around the mid-90s. The brother of one of her best friends (known them for maybe 40 years) was her doctor. Her second round was in the US, up in Dallas where she moved to in the early 2,000s. Between the two she says that her experience in the US was far better than in England. And having worked for American Airlines for some fifteen + years when she had the first round of cancer, her insurance was really very good and covered the best treatment that she could get. The problem was the waiting time and just general system that she needed to deal with in the UK.
