  1. After 20 years of living in Austin, I finally had the opportunity to ride Palo Duro Canyon. I was able to get in 20 miles before having to reluctantly finish my ride and continue the trek back to Austin. This trail system has some of the best views you'll get in Texas, and the trails offer a variety of riding. Some trails have many technical features, combined with sharp climbs or descents. Others offer fast, flowing singletrack that you can really hammer on (being careful of others, of course). There's nary a straight piece of trail in the whole park! Highly recommend, and I look forward to riding again! Some photos here: Strava track: https://www.strava.com/activities/1930284821 ..Al

  6. On rare occasions (like, whenever I'm awake) I will make a pun. Then, will experience both delight and a sense of satisfaction in the groans the pun generates in others. In the instances when the groan doesn't come I will often begin to explain the pun, knowing fully well that they got it and chose purposefully to withhold acknowledgement. Does that make me a bad person? Should I be PUNished for such behavior?

  7. EBers, more conferring has taken place, and all parties are in agreement that we should move the EB into the new year, and we have selected Saturday, January 12 as the new date. Factors which came into play: - Barton Creek is currently unsafe to cross, so we would have been forced to skip the Green Belt. - More rain is forecast this week. - Thumper needs work, and this gives the crew a chance to to schedule work days and give the old girl some lovin. - This weekend would have been self-supported - a full volunteer crew is available on Jan 12. - There are no races scheduled on Jan 12. We take this re-scheduling seriously, and plan to put on a solid event in January. Meanwhile we will be posting a full schedule of pre-rides (Thumper, Green Belt, etc) starting in about two weeks (weather permitting). It's going to take Cody a couple of weeks to get Thumper rideable, and you'll see work-and-ride posts from him. If any of you are putting on your own pre-rides, feel free to share them so that others can enjoy the benefit - thanks! Finally, to the 11 of you who might be disappointed (per the poll), we hope you're able to get some riding in this weekend, and that you won't be too upset with the re-scheduling. From Pinthouse - er, EB HQ - that's all for now! Stay tuned for ride calls!

  8. Stopped in Moab on my way back from Portland last week. Ended up staying a full day there and riding the Magnificent 7 trails, which I've never ridden before. The first several trails were great! Then I got to the Gold Bar and Portal trails at the end. The first section of Gold Bar was fine, but then you get to a section of trail also used by Jeeps, and that wasn't as much fun (and a ton of brutal climbs!) After that, you do the long Gold Bar Rim trail, which runs along a canyon edge along Highway 191 north of Moab. Finally, the Portal trail, which has pretty extreme exposure and I walked a good portion of that due to the very high penalty of failure (death). I never need to ride that particular trail again! Photos here: I was going to hit as much of The Whole Enchilada as I could, and they were dropping people off at UPS (although there was a possibility of going as high as Kokopelli). Will have to come back earlier in the year before Burro Pass is closed. ..Al

  14. While I was at Walnut today, I drained the swamp that had accumulated in the big roller just below the log-pile in Mark's Art. You can imagine the deep rutting that was developing on the exit side.

  16. All of this good spirited enthusiasm, fortified by the bespaking of TAF burgers on Enriched Buns has, dare I say, motivated me to venture forth from the reasonably safe environs of Bastrop county in order to partake in this Sterling example of revelry and comradeship for the R&I to close the DST 2018 season at the world famous Metropolitan Park of Walnut Creek. 25. I did not. I was time limited, so I was trying to do a full loop with as much as I could fit in. I was following a 26 mile track from MTB Project called "Baby Grand", which included nearly everything out there, minus the Rock Garden Trail. I ended up skipping some stuff at the end because it took me longer than expected to get to the 20 mile mark, and I really had to get back on the road to head home (this was the end of my trip, having started in Portland on Monday). Next time I'm out there I'll be sure to include Rock Garden Trail. 🙂 ..Al

  36. Just got back from a trip. Thanks to everyone here for posting their experience. It was a big help planning our trip. It was incredible. The town is clean and friendly. It has weird sort of vibe where this MTB tourism thing is being accepted and embraced by the whole community, but many of the locals don't really understand it. Like "just smile and take their money". Not in a bad way. It's just a fairly new development for them. Day 1: We pulled into town about 5 and had another guy who flew in landing about the same time who was renting from Phat Tire. Parked near the shop and took off on Slaughter Pen. We had to stay pretty close to town because the guy flying was taking an Uber to the shop and meeting us after picking up the rental, and we thought it could take a while. Credit to Phat Tire, he was in and out. With the time constraints and circling back to meet our friend, it did make us session the stuff really close to town. All-American, Choo Choo, and Ozone turned out to be some of my favorite trails of the trip. Day 2: Back 40. We set out to do the main loop CCW (with Ledges detour). About halfway one guy crashed and ruptured him palm through the glove. It was really weird. The glove was undamaged, but there was a huge gash underneath. Instead of doing the whole outer loop, we cut through on some of the inner trails. From what I could tell, the green, blue, black system is mostly based on steepness, not tech. If you explore those inner loops, do your best to descend the blacks and blues and climb the greens. The ER near Blowing Springs is very nice. Day 3: It rained most of the night and into the morning. We drank most of the night and into the morning as well. We heard Hobbs State Park was a pretty chill ride and sheds water really well. It was perfect for us that day with all of us pretty tired/hungover and one guy with stitches in his hand. Plus, there was a big race in town, so we needed to avoid SP and Back 40. Hobbs was wet but not muddy with plenty of grip. The wet roots were a little slick, but not a problem. It was not technical at all, but the downs were fast with plenty of climbing back up. It was a bit of a haul. Under different circumstances, I would rather have explored the rest of SP and/or Coler, but if it's wet or you're looking for something more flowy XC style, I really enjoyed Hobbs.

  39. I'm trying to heal some injuries, it's been raining a lot, my warranty recently expired and I'm feeling bummed about selling my "new" bike frame... so what does one do in such circumstances? Some might strip the paint from their old bike and start polishing... I had intended to polish the whole frame, but stopped at the top tube and front of the downtube/head tube because I could polish that part while built... but the raw metal fading into the polished part is really growing on me...
